The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Good morning. It's raining here, too. I think it's supposed to keep it up until Thanksgiving. Looks like our first foal will be a muddy one.

Still raining here, too. I don't remember the last time we saw the sun, it's been gray and dreary for days. I wish I could find someone with a covered arena that I could lease for a couple of hours. My next door neighbor has one and she's a very nice woman but standoffish. I'm afraid to ask her.

Cindy, I'm curious as to why the stable owner is so anxious for you to breed SL, given that the foal would be yours? There's nothing wrong with it, just curious. Lot's of times when someone wants someone else to breed their mare it's because they want the foal, is why I'm asking.

I can't remember the last time it rained for so many consecutive days. I'm really tired of it:)

Tuffy, it never hurts to ask:).

I can remember rain for so many days that the solar powered fence chargers died. I think it takes 14 consecutive days without sunshine for that to happen.

We've only had a couple of rainy days this week, but it seems that we have more to look forward to.

Oh, yeah, I'm wondering why your mares are foaling so late in the year?

I know I should just ask but I don't want her to think I'm pushy. I've asked her to go riding on the trails with me but she's not interested. She's a professional barrel racer and I've never seen her ride outside the arena, even though she has lots of beautiful property.

Oh, what can she do to you, bite you? Be brave!

You can be very apologetic when you ask - only if she's not using it, horses getting restless, you'll clean up after your horse, etc. etc. Do something nice for her, whatever.

In our neighborhood, we all borrow everything under the sun back and forth, from pickup trucks to bandsaws to children (for manual labor!) Nobody's asked to borrow my dog yet, but I've loaned out my saddle . . .

I'm a chicken bwak bwak bwak

Everyone in this neighborhood (and I use the term loosely, we are very spread out) keeps to themselves. The people are all very nice, in passing, but we don't hang out together or borrow things. Most everyone has live in barn help so we don't even need to borrow kids. Actually, I have the oldest kids, most of the other kids in the neighborhood aren't much more than babies.

I've been reading the posts on the GWTW thread. shaking my head. Even the people who are defending it with "it's the truth from MM's perspective". Cracks me up:)

I forgot about that thread, I'll have to go back and read them.

I'm gonna run out and put the horses up, there is a ton of raining heading this way and they are probably tired of standing in it. It rained all night last night, too. I'll be right back.

My kids dug a ditch for our next door neighbor.

He has two Lab mixes, so his dogs and our dog "helped", with the result that the kids, the dogs, and everything nearby got VERY muddy.

But a glorious muddy time was had by all. Especially the dogs.

Yeah, I could see how if you live farther apart it isn't as easy to broach the subject of borrowing something.

We live in "inner suburbia", our lot's just a little under an acre and we can see four of our neighbors' houses from our front yard. So naturally we see each other a lot while mowing lawns, cutting brush, etc. Also, my husband and our neighbor to the north are both woodworkers, so they are always comparing this and that.

Sounds great.

I've tried hiring neighbor kids, but it didn't work out so well:(.
They want to be paid, but don't want to work.

I just do it mightself now.

Our neighbor hood is made of 5 acre lots. But all wooded, so we can just barely see one neigbors house.

Years ago, there seemed to be alot more socializing and neighborliness in this area. We went years without any one new building or moving in. In the last few years we had a rash of "newbies" build. The newbies got together and tried to organize a Home Owners Ass. Caused alot of trouble with the older home owners here. We didn't want one. Anyway, seems that everyone has gotten into the you stay on your land, I'll stay on mine.

Luckily the water company that supplies water for this area has run out of taps, and won't have any for a long time. You can't dig wells here, so all the lots that haven't been built on probably won't be now. So we shouldn't have a problem now with the newbies outnumbering the older ones.

Good morning everyone.... Do you get mud when it rains for days on end, or does your ground drain pretty well?

When our kids get into college, we're probably going to move a bit further out, and get less house and more land.

What little dirt we have is mostly clay. So it does get muddy, and very slippery, but not the muddy you sink to your knees in. When it dries, which it does fairly fast, it's as hard as the rocks.
