Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I like your pictures:). Do you live in Neveda. The background looks so much like Las Vegas.

Eventually it will be Jenny and me together. She doesn't want to quit her job now till she has a kid, about a year.
Kristy will probably work when I need a day off.

Speaking of babies, when are most foals born? Why?
Thank you so much for the website. We do have so many patrons with one type of handicap or another, and sometimes some of them feel so limited. It'll be great if I can find something about him, I'll check the website to see.
Yes I'm in northern Nevada. High desert :)
Most foals are born in the spring, if weather permits, the earlier the better. This is because in racing and horse shows, the horse's birthday is essentially Jan 1. So if your horse is not born until late spring or summer, it has a 6mos disadvantage over the others that it is competing against.
And I have to have my own place before one weaned. I can't afford another boarder.
The average time that a horse carries a foal is 342-354 days. Factor that into your planning too - here we don't breed until April generally, although one mare got bred earlier last year. That's because we're trying to get closer to good weather. We can keep them in with heat lights for awhile, but it's good for them to be able to get out and run.
'Course, you live where the weather is fairly good don't you?
He travels all over the world doing clinics. Let me know if you want to talk to him, I might be able to help with that.
Jan/Feb can be chilly. Now I know what she meant by start in Feb. I have a "delicate" question. Is it a one time deal or do you lease the stud for awhile?
I was just looking at the website. I wonder if he would give a library a discount on books and videos if he has any. I just read the front page there and he is really something. What a great role model.
Before I ask you to see if he'll talk to me, I want to talk to some people about hiring him to do a seminar some time next year. My neighbor is very involved in wild horse rescue, and because of that is involved with Lacey J Dalton's Let Them Run Free organization.

Seems like maybe between them, they might know someone who could pick up the tab for a seminar - especially if it were organized free to the public or at least to some of the group homes around here. Then horsemen could learn something, as could some of our kids.
Just depends. Natually mares most fertile time is from June till Aug, what my vet told me.
A quarter horse foal according to the Ass. rules is always a year older on Jan 1. So breeders try to have foal born as early in the year as possible so they are bigger when the show season starts. Even if a foal is born in Dec. it is considered a yearling in Jan. even tho it is only a month old. Show classes are Weanlings (under a year old), yearlings, and so on.
Foals born late in the year have to deal with not much pasture, cold temps, etc. Unless fed good the mares milk might not be the best to help the foal grow to it's full potential.
Mares are pregnant for 11 1/2 months.

What you would do is take your mare to the stud owner's place. She would probably be there about 30-45 days. They would check her to see when she comes in heat, and then breed her every other day for up to a week. Sometimes a mare only stays in for two breedings, sometimes longer. Most places will keep her through one cycle to see if she comes into heat again.
Now, if it's a friend and she's close and her stud is easy to handle, she may bring him over to your place to breed your mare and then come back again as needed. It probably also depends on how much breeding she's doing.
You don't lease a stud. You send your mare to the stud, and she should come back in foal. You will pay the stud fee and mare care, unless you find a stud close enough to take the mare back and forth for breeding. You should breed every other day, which usually means 2 or 3 breedings.
There is a shot you can give mares to bring them in, which helps with timing. We did that with Belle the first time we bred her. This time we caught her in season without giving the shot. We gave the shot the first time, because I didn't decide to breed her till late June. I thought I was pushing best breeding time and wanted to make sure we got it done.

I don't think he has any books or videos but I don't know that for sure.
I hope things work out, let me know if I can help.
I'm heading over to that link you posted...
We seem to be repeating ourselves:)

I'm not sure either one of us have the best motives here. Both of us are nurses and I've always been facinated with genetics. We just talk about how we could increase the odds of this or that. She wouldn't make any money for awhile and I would have another horse:') Just talk right now but it's a very interesting topic. Today it was black tails/manes/ bay color and oh yeah that lightening bolt on Sarah Lee's flank:')
This is Lacy J's Let 'em Run site

Yep - but she asked you, I butted in, for which I apologize. Plus your answer was better :)
