The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Glad you liked 'em. I debated about posting them all. I know they take a long time to load, but I really enjoy other people's pictures so I thought I'd return the favor. Sorry to hear that you're sore. It happens to me just about every time I ride coz at best I get to ride once a week, but sometimes it's two or three, then I feel like I'm 90 years old the next day.

Yeah, she's funny about that. I can tell she gets down, when I switch head stalls and stuff on her and she has to use something of mine that doesn't match her stuff:) Guess it's a young girl thing.

What a pretty trail. I love looking at pictures people post here. Funny about being sore. I'm fine the next day. It's the second day when I feel it:')

It may not be about Heather but about the horse. I like mine to coordinate too. I find myself not thinking about what looks good for me but what looks good on the horses. I only wanted black for Okie. I think leather looks good on Sarah Lee. Dressing up a horse, silly huh? Oh well. I didn't have dolls when I was younger and my old dog had to do. I guess I carry it over:')

All my horses like to spash too, and I let them. Some people I ride with give me nasty looks when I do it, says it spoils 'em, but I figure, hey, my horse has got to carry my butt around all day, the least I can do is let them have a little fun in the creeks. As for posting pics of yourself, I like seeing pictures of who I'm talking to, gives a face to the tagline, so thanks for the pics! :o)

Turnout and fashion are all part of the art of horsemanship! I like for me and the horse's gear to look 'put together' too, especially when we go somewhere!

I end up being an odd mutt though, since I don't exactly wear english field garb to match the style of my tack.

That spot in the creek is about the deepest place we can cross at. In fact we call it the deep water crossing. But it just recently filled back up. It was totally dry a few weeks ago. It's a good place to train one, except the path leading to it that is behind me is pretty steep. So if you have a horse not wanting to go in it can be kind of hairy going down. The other side is not as steep but very rocky. So either side can be difficult for a horse not wanting to go in.

Seems like a good spot for Miss Cyn to figure out she can't jump all the water crossings ;~D

I don't let new ones start splashing to much, I'm always afraid they are fixing to lay down. Rusty will just stand and splash as long as I let him. I think he learned to do it as a way to cool down at the last place he was at. They had a pond. I always take him there at the end of a ride to cool off before coming home. I always make sure everyone is in the clear before taking him in. He can soak everyone close by:) Of course in the summer it's not that big of a deal, but that water was cold Tues. My pant legs were soaked before Heather got a good one of us.

After I posted that comment, I thought about it. I remember, when I was still riding Belle, I kept her stuff matching, and kept her groomed all the time. I've gotten lazy about that stuff now. I make sure there is no dirt where ever a strap or the saddle pad is but the rest I leave. And I've gotten bad about not keeping their bridle pads clipped, unless we're going somewhere special. I'm so bad:)

You know, it's funny, I've had horses hesitate at that spot, but have always managed to get them in relitively easy. But those same horses that will go in there, will do everything they can to avoid puddles and other narrower places they can jump. I've always wondered if it had to do with the clearness of the water. Harley has been the hardest to get in puddles, altho Heather said he is gettting better.

I should. Maybe I would if we were going somewhere but it's like puttering around the house. I prefer jeans and a tee shirt or sweat pants but a dressed out horse. My hair mussed doesn't bother me but a matted mane or tail does:')

Yeah, english garb is a bit fussy. I always just ride in a polo shirt and black leggings in the summer and a sweatshirt and sweat pants in the winter, sometimes 2 layers depending on how cold it is. I can NOT ride in jeans. The inside seams, especially the one in the crotch just, quite literally, chap my butt. I may look a little goofy, but I'm not out to win any beauty contests. I don't want to have to get up early enough to get my gear together, drive an hour to get to the trailhead, AND look good myself too coz I usually end up with mud and horse slobber all over me anyways.

The creek looks like water. Dark puddles may look like holes. I know it probably spoils mine but I walk our riding areas out first and walk thru the puddles with them. Both will follow me right thru but when riding they want to check them out first.

My oldest horse is bad about wanting to skirt or jump puddles. But he also liked to play in the water. When he was young and I just started riding him, we were riding a trail that was also used by off road vehicles, so the trail was basically one big long mud hole in places that was 8 or 10 inches deep. He was walking along in the mud and the next thing I know he's laying down. No pawing, no warning, just layed down with me just sitting there on him wondering how I got there. He didn't want to get up either, the goofus. I was afraid he was going to roll on over so I got off and smacked him with the reins until he got up. I was covered in mud from the knees down by the time I got mounted back up, and my shoes were FULL. It was kinda gross. So he got watched real careful in the water for quite a while after that.

My mare laid down just like that 3 times with me in water. Twice in the creek and once at a puddle. She always got up as fast as she went down, so 2 times I came right back up on her, but once I was with a friend that started hollering for me to get off. I started getting off as she came back up. I guess me hanging off her side spooked her so she jumped and I came off and landed in the puddle:). I'd have gotten less wet if I'd have just stayed on. Since then I take my feet out of the stirrups when crossing water on any horse.
