Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I would go get some books on the subject! And perhaps find an experienced person, if not your vet, to spend some time, look your mares over, and give some advice and help when it happens.
Why is this such a surprise?
I was just thinking yesterday while down at my son's house where my mare is, that it will just be 2 months now and I will bring her home:). Then only 3 months till foal time.

Did you get to meet your Marine?
Becky
He's a National Guardsman, not a marine, but no we didn't - yet. He was delayed until nearly 1:00 AM in New Jersey. I haven't heard from him this morning to know if that flight finally worked or whether they stayed over. We'll try to meet up with him today. I have a box to deliver of his personals and things like his cell phone, that his wife sent to give to him.
Those are some great pictures, Frog. Sorry I didn't have time to really look at the thread last night. Catching up this morning.
I didn't know that you had a little one on the way! Congratulations! Is this Belle that's in foal?
Seconding the call for the AWOL Cindy!
Wasn't she going this weekend to see how Sarah Lee was coming along?
Yes, it's Belle:). I think I'm more excited this time then 4 years ago. I didn't really want to do it then, but did hoping it might help her problem, it was a last resort thing that several people said might help.
Anyway this time I want a foal. Her last one Dot, has turned out to be sooooooooooo good, that now I want 5 actually. One for each grandkid I have, one for each future grandkid (my two kids each want one more apiece), and one for me:) I told everyone, I'll wait to see who gets each one once they are here. I may want this one:)
Belle is due the last of April.
Becky
Yeah, but not till today. Was the place she was at far away? I didn't think so.
Becky
I think it was some hours away, maybe they made a trip of it. We aren't very good keepers, not keeping watch very well ;~\
Reporting in for duty:'). Hi, yall. It's been a very busy week. Yeah, I'm supposed to go see Sarah Lee today. He called yesterday and told me to call back this afternoon because too muddy. So either this evening or tomorrow I guess.
Well, thank goodness... we thought we'd lost you!
I was starting too worry:)
Becky
I could tell when my mares were getting within a day or so of foaling when they start to "sink in" on the top of their croup on either side of the tail head. I think this is supposed to mean that their pelvic bone is expanding. I don't think I've ever seen my mares "wax" but I've heard everyone else say that. I've had trouble with one of my mares not "cleaning out" good after a birth. This is usually only a problem if you plan on breeding the mare back. My vet recommended that I give her a shot of occytocin as soon as the foal was on the ground to stimulate her uterus to contract and expel all the afterbirth and fluids. I always give the foal a dose of probiotics to get the beneficial bacteria into their stomach and prevent a case of scours that they sometimes get. Good luck and enjoy it! It's the coolest thing in the world to have a new baby! Are you planning on imprinting the babies?
Sorry. I haven't done any riding this week. Sarah Lee gone, lessons cancelled and Okie decided to take off two of his shoes (right side). the ferrier can't get out til Monday . Can you open TOS?
Becky
Heather always looks so great in all her matching gear!
No it's shut down for awhile. Not sure why, but Mack told me it was shut.
