Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I like that combo bridle/halter for trail. I've seen other attempts at the same thing that aren't as neat as that one.
Blade enjoys splashing in the water...
The far north end of the trail at the Tennessee state line.
I love that bridle. I've got 2 of 'em. An old guy that used to live around here made it for me. It's got all solid brass fittings. You just can't get them like that from anywhere else. He's in a nursing home now and I sure do hate it.
Thank you for those pictures. That is such beautiful country. How long was the ride? Looks like you are riding with a really nice group of guys.
Well, that's why it's better, you had that friend to make it. The ones I've seen don't look like they are aren't really good at being halters or bridles. I like yours a lot.
Neat trail pics, thanks for sharin' em! I'd love to get ecurbh and me out again, I just don't know when it's going to happen.
Those pictures remind me of some of our older towns around here - old west flavor :) Sort of Virginia City without the Harleys.
The town of Elkmont is about the mid-point of the trail, which is about 3 miles long on the south end and 5 miles long to the north. The old depot is the parking area. The pictures were taken on the north end. The Limestone county Parks and Rec is responsible for the recent upgrades and they've done a wonderful job. They plan on adding 8 to 10 inches of rock dust as the base for the trail, which will be really nice on the horses feet, then adding 2 or 3 more miles to the south end some time next year.
Hey I like riding with my friend that is a 'guy over sixty'. It beats my other friend that likes to woop and go like she'd rather be on an off road race than a nice quiet trail ride!
It looks like a great place to ride.
LOL - I'd never thought about hogs. We work on getting our horses used to llamas, goats, cattle and camels. Who'd of thought they'd be afraid of hogs. I don't think any of my horses have ever seen them though, I don't know of any around here.
Yeah, I don't imagine there are too many back yard hog pens in Nevada. This one is at an old house along the side of the trail that someone just fenced in and put hogs in there. There's a pretty good sized lot for them to root around in that goes up the side of a hill. They seem to really get a kick out of hiding in the bushes and then coming screaming down the hill. Scares the sh!t out of you. I didn't know hogs could move that fast! If a pig could laugh, they'd be laughing. There are a fair amount of cows along the trail, no goats I think, but CAMELS?! Where the heck do you see CAMELS on your trail rides?
The guy that used to live at the end of the block, now across the highway (about 1/4 mile away) has camels, emus and ostriches. It's the Nevada Camel Company and he provides the camels for the Virginia City camel races, plus gives trail rides on them.
I don't know anything about hogs except pot bellied pigs. Some people have those here. I know in California there are boars in some of the mountain regions. Aren't hogs carniverous? I mean, don't they eat just about anything the gets in their run/pasture/whatever? Seems I read about some serial killer feeding bodies to his hogs.
Post 3775 was to you, I seem to have gotten carried away with the vision of hogs running down the hill at you.
Our last trail ride there was the butchered carcass of a big hog like that dumped right in the middle of the trailhead. It stunk bad to our senses, the horses walked around it without ~too~ much fuss.
A friend has Alpacas and a direct neighbor with Emus. He should rent out his pasture next to them as a training aid ;~D
We occassionally run into dead animals on the trail - the horses do not like it at all.
They didn't react as bad as I thought they would. It was a big group of horses of all experience levels, and it was right at the start of the ride when horses were excitable and fresh.
I worry a lot, it was an unfamiliar group to me and there were kids, but it wasn't the first challenge on that ride that everyone did just fine on. I should have given them more credit. ;~D
Someone dumped two dead horses out here in the desert. Our horses wanted no part of getting near them at all. Most of what we run into is coyote or lion kill and there isn't much left. They still get really uncomfortable. It's odd because my husband has taken one of the geldings on hunting trips and that doesn't seem to bother him nearly as much.
