Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

You just put a little half hitch at the slobber strap. They usually come with a shuefly (tassel) on one end and a popper on the other.

The shuefly end is tied off to the slobber strap and the popper if left for the 'git down' end.

The technical term is "mota".

Did you get a horsehair one?

Sorry. Reread your post, you did say horsehair. Is yours made of mane hair or tail hair? Mane hair is supposed to be softer and more supple.

(I've been doing research. I'm going to the tack store today if I get the chance)

Yeah, the one that I ordered is a six strand mane hair, 5/8" x 22'. Cost was about $65. Slobber straps were another $30.

If you don't have a National Ropers Supply catalog, you should get one. They sell good quality tack with tips and explanations scattered throughout the catalog.

Their number is 1-800-467-6746. The catalog has stuff that isn't on their web site.

I've been talkin' about bull riding ;~D
I did that once. But is was a very tame bull that I rode around a friend's pasture. Did it on a dare. In retropsect it was probably a very stupid thing to do, but he just kind of plodded around.

Your shop sounds like a great idea. Can you bulk purchase Tshirts cheap enough to make a profit at $5? It would be so nice to find a business that was fun and profitable and your own.

Thanks! I just ordered the white mecate, a set of slobber straps and a chin strap. I liked that site, hope they ship pretty quickly.

Here goes, just to see if it'll work... This is the first bridge they've built over a small stream...The guy in the picture is my riding buddy, Donny.

All of my riding buddies are male and over 60. I can't find any women to ride with. But they are as nice a bunch of guys as you could ever hope to meet. No cursing, swearing or drinking, and they don't seem to mind having me tag along with them.
