Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Yes, please.
Something bothering Cindy. She has both ears raw where she's been scratching. I need to bath her I guess but it's too cold. I brushed her real good and put some Caladryl on her. My neighbors growing peppers and they are in my yard too so she may have been digging in them. I put her in the garage and I'll bath her in a tub there tomorrow. Yalls ever tear their ears up? What do you do?
Tuffy DESTROYS his ears. He has an allergy of some sort so I have to give him steroids about twice a year. All the vets I've been to have given up and told me to take him to A&M.
I would suspect a yeast infection.
Stick a Q tip into her ear and see if it comes out with brown gunk on it. If yes, her ears need both rinsed out and an antifungal. You can get these things at the vet.
Or, you can mix up a vinegar and water solution in a squirt bottle, fill the ear up and swish it around a little, then let her shake the water out, and repeat that a couple times, then use any antifungal cream for yeast, like Monostat, squirt that in and really swish that around good so it goes deep into the ear. Do that every day for 3-4 days, and it should clear up. Trimming hair around the ear and avoiding swimming in swampy kinds of water will prevent this if it becomes chronic. Labs and other water-loving flop-eared dogs are really prone to this.
Sometimes there is a bacterial element to yeasty ears if it has gone on awhile, and if so, it really will need an antibiotic from the vet.
The chapters work very hard establishing and maintaing trails in Ohio.
Eddie going to help me get her in the tub in awhile. Oh yea! She hates water and I'm going to have to get in with her because it has sliding glass doors. I'll do the vinegar thing in her ears while I'm in there. I've got some human fungal and antibiotic cream I was going to put on her tonight. I wanted to get the itching stopped first though.
Welcome to the Saddle Club :) Looking forward to pictures of your horses.
Just my opinion, but based on experience. If your stud horse is not going to be used as a stud (and I'd think real hard about that) geld him. It will make him a much safer and predictable riding horse. Yes, it will make a difference, even at his age. Our term here for gelding is brain surgery, which it surely is. :)
I finally got out today, still sitting in the clouds but about 50 degrees and sunshine. Learned that the new mare needs a lot of work before I can ride her safely but husband is willing to do it and she is just ignorant, not meanspirited. Got our friend back up on her mare (the one we are leasing) and she has gained enough confidence just working with all the horses and showing that she is now comfortable with the mare's size. Took her picture for her Christmas card and she left beaming from ear to ear.
As they used to say in the A Team, I love it when a plan comes together. :)
Thanks. I'll have to study up on posting pictures (and maybe sharpen the pocket knife).
pocketknife? :')
The ladies here are experts at posting pictures, they can walk you through it.
The other is just my opinion only. :)
Make sure you get them thoroughly dry if you get them wet.
The antifungal cream is what will stop the itching if it's yeast.
Yeah , that's another trip. She will get blow dryed.
We're going to get our gaggle together for our new Christmas card picture too one of these days.
Is she growing hot peppers? Capsasin is a powerful skin irritant. Either that or it could be dry skin and or/ear mites?
Si Senorita. Mucho caliente!
I'm hoping it's just the peppers but going to treat that it could be bugs or fungus. Either way she has scratched her ears raw and I have to treat them. If she doesn't show improvement in a few days I'll take her to the vet.
Hahahaha. :-)
Some horses are just akward like that, or it could have been a balance issue with you. I had that same problem with the black mare that I ride until I got used to taking corners with her. Did the same thing on the corners that you did. She also has an extra little hitch in her trot that makes her feel lame when she's trotting around to the right for example, but she's perfectly sound.
