The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Welcome. I'm in S Texas. My husband and I fairly new at this. I have two paints.

I've been told that gelding him won't accomplish much at his age. He's pretty easy to handle, though. He is a real people friendly horse. Before we had him broke, he was basically a puppy dog.

Actually, we discussed this recently on this thread, and it is the belief of many here that it definately ~would~ eliminate his stallion drives at any age.

Our discussion started here: 2,880

Did he pace instead of trot? If you're not sure, did his trot feel more like floating along, no bounce at all? If so, he was probably gaited. Did they say what breed he was?

Just to be safe, I'd get that sucker gelded. If you are new to horses, you don't need a stud. They are a huge liability and only for the experienced horseman (or woman).

No, he's just another horse the owner picked up for schooling. I didn't bounce at all. I didn't think gaits cantered though. She asked if I wanted to and I told her Tue because it was getting dark and I was having trouble seeing the cones at a trot. I still think that horse leans to the left a little bit. Maybe not though:')

Some horses have much better trots than others, to be sure!

Can't explain the leaning... perhaps his farrier always trims him standing on a hillside, lol ;~D

Was it a fast trot or just a jog? If you were not bouncing at all at a fast trot I would bet money he was gaited. Absolutely you can canter a gaited horse. Those Tennessee Walking horses, the ones with the "big lick" shoes, have a lovely, huge canter. Very "rocking chair-ish".

My job was to keep him in a trot thru cones and around the arena without him "dieing" He's older, has some arthritis, and will go to a walk at the first chance. Once he's warmed up though he can move real good. "It was "keep him going Janis, don't let him die, keep him troting" He was fun.

I'll check it out. We were running late and losing light so it was more of " ok red horse, let's go"

He sounds like my kind of horse. I much prefer the ones that I need to keep going as opposed to the ones you have to work to slow down.

Both of mine would rather walk when saddled. Sarah Lee literally would sigh when you got off her. I thought it was just me but she did it for the owner who weighs a lot less than I do. She also used to breath hard but has gotten better. I think it was the humidity.

Humidity sure makes me breathe hard.

You'd have to be awful darn big on a very small horse in order to make them breathe hard. The girl I bought Tuffy from was a big girl, probably pushing 250-300 pounds. He was only a 2 year old packing that weight so I asked a trainer and a vet if they thought the weight would be a problem. They both said, and I quote, "no way!" I'm no lightweight but I'm not quite that big.

Sarah Lee can handle it. It was just funny how she would sigh though. It was like she was taking off a girdle or something.

That's pretty funny. Tuffy snores like a freight train. He lays flat on his side and snores so loud it can rattle the barn doors. First time he did that after I bought him, I thought he was dying.

Get him a mare to elbow him in the ribs so he'll turn over:')

Well I'm taking the kids and the stroller to the store (about a mile there). See how well I do:')

Welcome to the thread.

I have a good morning ping list to keep us all current. Would you like on it?

Dreary gray day here. I should get up and do something....
