The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Hello,

We've come back to my brothers to rest awhile today. We walked miles yesterday and didn't see 1/2 of what we planned on seeing. Jenny and I have bought alot of Christmas presents. We can't buy anymore, because we couldn't get it home. I got some really neat toys for the grandkids at FAO Schawartz. I also won 12.00 on a nickle slot machine last night:). I'm not much of a gambler. Will probably try some more tonight.

Tomorrow we will go see the Venetian casino, they have gondolas inside. We fly out of here about 5:40.

One of my older relatives that I mentioned was very ill, died Wed. so I will miss one of the funereals. It's Sat.

It will be good to get home, Kristy says Susie is missing me bad:(. She took Harley to her house and has been riding him and tieing him to the trailer. He doesn't like that. He'll stand tied to the tree all day, but does not like the trailer. I have a feeling she will have him over it by the time I get there:)

Becky

Yeah, even though I didn't feel like riding today I was going to go spend some time with her. I'm waiting on my husband though. He stopped to vote and they had run out of ballets. The trainer said I could make it up tomorrow or Sunday. Thinking about just taking a nap:')

Good evening everyone, I have a question and was wondering if ya'll have had a similar problem. My paint is always slipping on his back feet at the canter. The only place I have to ride is on grass so I guess it's pretty slippery. Anybody have any experience with studs or caulks on their horses shoes?

Grass is slippery, and lots of horses will slip at the canter, especially in tight corners like lunging on grass. I work mine on grass too. I think it is sloppiness as much as anything else and I treat it like any other lazyiness with a correction and cue to wake up and drive. It's a complacency they get when you get on, or when you are at the end of the lunge line, where they feel they are no longer required to pay attention to their feet, because they don't slip when they are loose runnin on it, and they don't slip in a round pen but will on the lunge.

To some degree it is an impulsion and collection problem and when Bay is kindof loose in the back and strung out, he'll slip. If he is collected and driving from behind, he's less likely to slip. I think it's like putting weight in the back of a pickup for better traction.

Of course they make a cleat shoe, but I'd try to work his balance, collection, and concentration on where he is putting his feet. Lunging with a couple caveletti or even one or two poles around the circle that will bring his concentration back to what he is doing might help him retrain himself to canter more balanced and nimble.

Have you ever lunged with a snaffle and two lines? You can work on his collection with more precision that way.

Well, you are probably right because he is very lazy, I just didn't of that as being the problem. No, I haven't ever lunged him with 2 lines but I have all the stuff so I'll try it tomorrow.

Come to think of it, he never does slip when he's out running and playing. The piss-ant is jackin' with me!

I've not tried studs, but I always use "heeled" shoes if that's what you mean by caulks. I can't tell much difference. Having a little borium put on the shoes at the toes and heels is the best way to go if you really want some traction. I usually go that route when Christmas parade season starts. My 16 yr old 17 hand gelding fell down with me in a recently sealed asphalt parking lot one year and couldn't get up until he managed to crawl over to some less slippery pavement so I've used them from then on when I'm going to be riding on pavement. They make the shoes last FOREVER too but they're a little hard on trailer floors. If you know somebody who welds, you can buy the rods at some welding supply shops for about $7 a piece and one rod will do about 2 sets of shoes if you don't put too much on each one.

Good morning,

I thought about borium but I wasn't sure if that was strictly for pavement or would be good on grass, too. I have 2 weeks before my shoer comes out so I'm going to work with Tuffy and see if I can get a change out of him before going to borium or studs. Do you put the borium on yourself or does your shoer do it?

Were you ok when your big gelding fell with you? I bet he was plenty scratched up.

My trainer's TB always had studded shoes on his back feet when it was wintertime so that he wouldn't slip on the ice. They worked for him, but heaven forbid for you if he kicked you, or stepped on you. You'd have to take care of the stud holes though, and pack them when they weren't being used, and it's a pain in the butt to try to change them. Grass shouldn't be that slippery unless it's wet though. Have you had a vet look at him?

By them, I mean the studs. Not the stud holes :-) Sorry 'bout that.

I read that you had to take care of the stud holes and that they were a pain to mess with. Yes, the vet is involved, Tuffy's been x-rayed, poked, prodded, blocked, you name it. In all of my research, I've come across people having good luck with chiropractic work, albeit for different problems. I wonder if that would be worth a try.

That looks like so much fun. We just got back from Boo at the Zoo and eating pizza. I don't know who had the most fun, the boys or me watching them:')

Something did happen at the zoo that made me feel uncomfortable though. I have a grandparents membership. It includes a 10% discount at the gift store, up dates ,a couple of closed special events and free admission for Boo at the zoo with members only from 5-6. As we were going in a worker directed a family to the front and told them that general admission didn't start until 6 and only members allowed at this time. They said ok and walked off and he looked at the guy with him and said "it's just not right" and shook his head. It's only a minimum of 50 dollars a year and most parents could afford this. I had 7 passes and even gave two away to a lady at the end of the general admission line. I really resented his attitude.

I'm glad you had fun, although the guy's attitude is strange. I spent the day cleaning my office. It'll take another two weeks I suspect.

LoL. I have a huge bedroom. The bed is in the middle and we each have our "office" on each side. I have been cleaning my desk for days and still not thru. I have thrown 2 garbage bags of stuff away. Mostly papers.

OMG We must be related :) One trash bag full off the top of my desk and the shelf. Haven't started on the drawers, bookcases or piles of important papers under the desk. For important papers, read genealogy. :)

Great pictures!! I've always wanted to try one of those mazes.... What kind of dog is that - very pretty.... We are sitting up with our "Rosie" tonight awaiting puppies... They were supposed to be Election Day puppies - but looks like we'll have "Halloween puppies" instead... I said the first boy would be named "BOO"....

We usually only have purebred Springer Spaniel puppies (Like George Bush's beloved Spot) This is an OOPS litter (as in "oops Mom - I let Rosie out and guess what....) The father is a German Shorthaired Pointer....

I guess they will be good hunting dogs - but won't be able to sell them as I usually do - May just recoup My costs of shots, and other vet costs.....

But we will enjoy them....
