Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Did that. I guess it just takes time.
Well, I think they are pretty drenched! Why and how long did you soak them? What kind of oil? Typically, I wipe leather down with oil, but not 'soak' it.
Just a leather oil. I can't remember the name. They were new and stiff. Wiping would probably have been better but they soaked for a few days. I thought about puting them out in the sun but I don't want them to crack. My husband says not gonna happen as oily as they are:')
Oh and the reason they soaked so long was because they were in the garage and I forgot about them. I had only planned on overnight.
a few days eh? Well, they're saturated. I don't know how long it will take for them to dry out enough ;~D
Well actually more like uh 4 or 5. (ducking)
They sure are pretty though lol
Seriously, they will dry out though? I didn't know if they were ruined.
In time they would, I'd think. I don't really know, I have never soaked anything in oil. Why did you soak them> Where they really dry and stiff or something? You can probably use something to cut the oil on them to try to save them if they haven't gotten better in a few days. keep them in a warm place, and keep wiping them, I guess.
Hello. Mack and brother talking business this morning. Probably won't do much today till Jenny gets done at 4:00.
We went to her hotel room to visit last night. She's on the 16th floor of the Rio. She was rooming with another very young little girl, Jenny says she's 21, but she was drunk:(. We were visiting and she got up and wondered out. I've been worrying about her all morning. She seemed so very young to be wondering around Vegas.
It's been raining here. Only souppose to get in the 60's.
Becky
You go to Vegas and get rain? That's too bad.
Hi. Is today the last day of her conference? Yall have any plans or just playing it by ear? Does Mack go to musicals? I dragged Eddie to see Mama Mia the last time we were there. He won't admit it but I know he enjoyed the play:')
I took a saddle care class one time about caring for your saddle and stuff at a saddle shop in town.
They said that you should wash your stuff with mild soap and water. Let it dry , then wipe it down with Neatsfoot oil. You have to be sure it is real Neatsfoot. It usually comes in a small bottle and is pretty expensive. There is some fake stuff you can buy by the gallon that is called Neatsfoot Compound. It's not good, don't use it.
If your bridle was mine:), I would get it and wash it throughly with a degreaser dish soap, let it dry, then wipe it down with oil. Since it's new leather it should be OK. But alot of oil like that will cause it to rot quick, and mold.
Becky
Yeah, today Jenny will be done. We are staying till late Sat.
CD, is trying to get tickets to a show with Blue Men???. It's at the hotel he works at.
I saw bill boards about the Mama Mia. Was it good?
Becky
I'll try that but I may just have to replace them. It's just the reins . The bridle just wiped and fine.
I liked it. I wasn't involved with drama in school so it was only like the 2nd or 3rd play I had gone to and the first that was a musical. Eddie wanted to see the blue men also but we couldn't get tickets or something. Just remember the time zone. We got late tickets , around 10 PM which we found out was still midnight to us:')
There was some kind of mink oil I used once that molded and rotted the stitching on my saddle.
I use a spray product called "Leather new" which is a Glycerin cleaner and oil. It's in a spray bottle which I like, because I wipe it with a dry rage and it's tidier than soaking a rag and wiping on.
Having my all-synthetic saddle is nice... wipe it down with a rag if it's muddy and it doesn't dry out ;~D
Blue Man group is really interesting. They make drums and percussion instruments out of PVC pipe and other things, and it's a really neat sound.
Synthetic is nice. All you have to do is wipe them down. In a few months I'm going to buy a partial leather/synthetic one like Eddie has though.
If I knew then what I know now, I'd buy a synethic saddle, just for the light weightness of them.
