The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Becky - you know I am a novice but just thought I would pass this along for what its worth.... When the man delivered my paint this month and was taking him off the trailer - he commented on the manure in the trailer .... he said "Just remember that if any of your horses start acting "colicky" - there is something about a trailer ride that gets their systems "moving" again"....He also said he has saved countless vet bills by just loading his horse into the trailer and taking them on a little short ride.. ...

Again - this is nothing I have ever tried (haven't needed to - Thank the Lord) - but he has owned horses all his life and is in his 60's....

Saying a little prayer for Rusty - that you can identify and clear up his problems today!!! Keep us posted..... Cindy

Thanks. Trailer rides are a good cure. Have done that several times, and it works.

I may be trying that once JP, my grandson, goes home for the day. Fri. is grand kid day at grandma's:). But just thinking his mom will be here shortly and will have her trailer already hooked up. I may just throw Rusty in and take him for a ride.

I had a young filly get run over and killed just like that a couple of years ago. I'd bought her as an unbroken 2yr old and took her almost straight to the trainer for a month. I'd just gotten her back and she was shaping up to be a very nice little horse, but my other horses were very nasty to her so I moved them to my in-law's place for a while, hoping that a little one-on-one time would help us bond a little better. I checked on her at 9 the night before and she was fine, but when I got up to feed at 6 the next morning, she was not in the pasture. I have never felt such a sense of crushing panic in my life. I couldn't see how she got out, but she must've found a low spot in the fence took off looking for company. We drove all over looking for her, but my neighbor was the one who found her. She was lying on the side of the road, in a shallow ditch just deep enough that you couldn't see her easily. We had already driven past her a couple of times. I don't know who hit her or how she died, and I don't guess I ever will. The highway department picked her up shortly there after. She didn't have a mark on her besides a broken right rear pastern. I didn't see a bullet wound where someone had shot her and I asked around at all the local vets to see if any of them had been called out to put down a horse who had been hit by a car, but they hadn't. I didn't call the highway patrol. I was afraid that someone would sue me. My accountant, who also raises show horses and cows later told me that you are not liable for damages if someone hits your livestock on the highway unless it can be proven that you are chronically negligent in allowing them to get out. Horses don't like to be by themselves and I felt go guilty about leaving her alone. That is why I decided that I would never keep a single horse again. The more horses, the better in my book!

Bay's leg is better.

That's great! Maybe, you and hubby can go for a ride. That is, if you are feeling better. :)

That is so sad. Sorry for the lost.

I had a horse get hit by a car, only thing, I was on it. A man was drunk and ran off the side of the road. The horse only got a side swipe on the hind leg. We didn't go down, and nothing was broken. The driver did come back, and grabbed a hold of the horse, scaring me to death. I was only 14 years old. A couple stopped to help, notify my parents, and the police. We were very lucky, as my horse, only had a small cut.

I am better, ecurbh is just coming down with it. ;~D

But beyond that, it's pouring out today. Later on, we have to go to a baby shower for a friend. We bought the baby a pony :~D

It's really strong! I could ride it! (And I just couldn't get into the little baby stuff)

That is a really neat pony:)

Baby stuff is a bit.....overwhelming.

I know I find it hard to buy JP things. So far his favorite toy that I have bought was a plastic Elmo, that talks when you open up the top of his head...rather, the top of his head is hinged where his mouth would be. He's really cute and JP likes open and shutting it.

Anyway. Rusty about the same. I let him out in the pasture. It's raining here now, so he'll probably come up. I'll try feed again in a little while. Not expecting much tho.

Did he start grazing when you turned him out? - or is he just kindof standing around?

We knew a guy that roped with my son. His horse got out one night. On a highway. He was hit, by a truck, the funny/sad/scary thing was the truck window post caught him right behind the jaw, and knocked his head smooth off. Sent it flying down the highway about 20 feet. When the police came, one officer went to get it out of the road but couldn't lift it. Took 3 men to pick it up and load it.

I bet that scared the driver out of his wits. It was dark so he never saw the horse, or knew what he hit, till after.

I cant' see him from the house when he is out there, but when Kristy was riding Harley I went out to watch and he was picking at the pasture. There isn't much out there.

I would have put him in the yard, but I've had a lot of people comeing and going with horse trailers today, so I didn't want to put the wire gates up. There isn't much in the front yard either. And besides, he never really eats that much anyway, just mostly wonders around.

He's just a very finiky eater. That may be all this is. Except for the first day he did seem like he didn't feel good. Now it seems he feels OK just won't eat.

I bought a bottle of antibiotics when I went to the feed store. You think I should try that?? I don't know how long till this not eating gets serious, if he stays OK till Monday I rather hold off on that till the vet sees him. But if it's and infection of some kind the sooner I get him on them the better. When he had that infection before he never showed any signs of it, no runny nose or eyes, no cough. What would you do? I just don't know of any other vets I want to go too. All the other ones around here are soooooooooooo expensive.

~I~ don't think there is any real harm in giving him antibiotics now...

I don't think it would hurt him. But I'd really like to know for sure what this is all about. Would antibiotics work by Mon. and then we wouldn't be able to figure it out. Because if he gets better now, will I be able to know for sure it was the antibiotics, or he was going to get better anyway:).

Can you tell this horse has turned me into a babbling idiot:)

Just gave him his afternoon feed. He's at his bucket, hopefully he is eating and not just stirring it.

Man! You were indeed lucky. I've always had a horror of that very thing, and of having a wreck while pulling the horses in the trailer. Non-horse people don't think anything about roaring past someone riding a horse along the side of the road. I've even had truck drivers honk their horns at me. The goober-heads! I'm glad you and your horse were both ok
