Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I don't usually have bran on hand, but I do like to make hot grain mashes in winter when it is bitter cold out. They love it. I boil water and pour it on regular sweet feed or Bay's senior pellet and let it sit a minute. Might also be something Rusty would like using his pellets.
When Bay colicked earlier this year, our vet said to let him lay down if he wanted, just to not let him roll. We didn't walk him either, just left him turned out where he could move as much as he wanted to.
And yes, he got Banamine, twice... once early in the day and once later when symptoms recurred. Second time around he got a stomach tube and oil, also.
What happens with rolling?
That was good advice. Generally, the concern with rolling is twisting a gut. If they aren't rolling, no sense making them miserable by making them walk around.
Sometimes, horses won't drink enough when the temperature drops suddenly. I've been able to get them to drink warm water and that helps get stomach moving.
If they have an obstruction or an air bubble that is causing pain, they might try to roll. While movement is good; walking around can help get the bowel moving again, rolling is too violent and they can either twist or rupture their intestine.
No rolling
Yes, most horses do love that and I think it makes them feel good. Bran is sort of a laxative so it doesn't hurt to have a little on hand. My mares get that after they foal.
Not if they are colicky, no ;~D
Oh my. I wonder who I sent that last post to (red faced)
Right :) Unless they are just rolling to scratch their back or dry up sweat from a saddle pad, etc. Violent rolling because of a stomach ache is not good.
LOL - I've greeted people I thought I knew from prior threads, yucked it up like we were old friends, only to have them think I was kinda weird till I realized it wasn't the right screen name.
Well, they will probably be a little curious :)
Good morning.
Rusty is about the same. Standing quiet, and not eating.
He and Harley usually run up and down the panels biting and kicking at each other while I measure their feed at feed time. He did do a bit of that this morning. I don't know if this is colic, if it is it's not bad, other then it's lasting a long time.
I've got to leave here in about 30 minutes, Mack will keep an eye on him. If he's still like this when I get home, I'll probably get hold of the vet and have him checked.
I may call Kristy and have her come give him that Banimine shot.
Just to see what that does.
Becky
I've never been to the auction and I thought I wanted to go sometime. After hearing about your experience, I've changed my mind.
I can't imagine sending sending an old horse through the auction to go to a meat buyer. I was going to say that there are lots of people out there that will pick them up and take them to the meat plant, bypassing the auction, but then I remembered not everybody lives within 50 miles of 2 meat plants, like I do. (Bel-Tex and Dallas Crown)
By the way, mine are buried in a pet cemetery.
I keep a huge bottle of Banamine on hand at all times. One of my friends is an Equine Science major and she taught me how to do IV injections. That little skill has come in handy on several occasions.
Can you take his temperature? One of my horses was standing around, not eating, and I took his temperature and it was 103 (normal is around 100, I think). He had flu or something. Put him on antibiotics and he turned out fine.
Hpofully what's ailing him will pass then. I'll probably be out of here by the time you get back. Eddie stll wants to go. Have a safe trip today and you and Jenny have fun on your vacation this next week.
Well, good to hear that he didn't get worse overnight. Talk to you when you get back tonight.
