The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Can people just buy and ~have~ Banamine injections around or does it have to be administered by a vet, I wonder.

Well, the vet that died, isn't the one that got us thru the last episode. But for investigative treatment/diagnoses I'd rather have Doc Antle. If he was still here, I'd get very aggressive about tests and whatever, but I just don't trust other vets to not do alot of unnecessary stuff...

I may talk to the other one Fri. and see what she would reccommend and then decide. I don't know tho, now, really what to do. I'll see how he does thru the night and tomorrow.

You have to get the stuff from a vet, but they don't have to administer it. The vet left me a dose last time, but I think it's at Kristy's house, and of course they are not home.

Well, I sympathize that this is happening on a night when your emotional energy is probably pretty used up. Hopefully, it's some bad gas that will pass by morning.

That's pretty much what I'm thinking. But why??

Just checked him he is just standing quiet, not sweating, not breathing hard, good color in his gums, I hear gut sounds, he's just not eating, or moving around much...

Anything else I can check?

Attention: Becky's Rusty may be a bit colicky.

Just checked him he is just standing quiet, not sweating, not breathing hard, good color in his gums, I hear gut sounds, he's just not eating, or moving around much...

Anything else I can check?

Bay's colic this last time was my first colic. Hearing gut sounds is a comforting sign, but I don't know any other home remedies, except trying to encourage movement, and I think at the late hour and your being tired from a long day, I don't picture you wanting to walk him. Only other remedy I can think of would be to get mineral oil in him in case it is sand, but if he won't eat, not sure how you'd accomplish that, even if you had some oil on hand.

Lets ping the group.... see who's up.

Maybe a shot of banamine (sic)if you have it. Doesn't really sound like colic though. Has there been a change in the weather, change in feed, change in workouts? I know I should go back and read posts and check, I will as soon as I send this.

Is he kicking his belly or reaching around and scratching it?

No I don't think his symptoms are anything that obvious, just off his feed and standing looking glum.

She rode him twice this week after a long break all summer. Prior to this, he's had a deficiency and/or low grade infection where he didn't sweat properly and she had to be careful about him overheating. He colicked earlier this summer also. He'd been better and she had just put him back to work, relatively lightly, this week.

Sounds like Becky's off line now - if not or if you contact her, maybe try a warm bran mash, some molasses in it if she has it around.

She'll probably come on line tonight one of the times she's up checking on him.

It's so hard to know just by going by information on line. I've had horses just not feel like eating every once in awhile, but not colic. With horses that are colicing, we don't try to walk them any more, usually cross tie for awhile or stall and watch, and give a shot of banamine, then try bran mash.
