Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yes, at the end of the day they are just as tired as other horses. The plus is that your rear end is not as beat.....

I thought you were. My horse was a blood bay with 4 black stockings and black mane and tail. I was searching for a bay when I found her. : )
Years ago I fell in love with a Doc Bar QH mare, blood bay. I couldn't talk her owner into selling, although I sure tried. I really love that color.
When I found this one and looked her over. I talked to the owner/seller and paid for her right there. She went straight home to my barn. FrogInABlender helped a lot getting her started out right. There was never any setbacks or problems even though the horse was only greenbroke and barely knew anything. Her attitude was great and made her easy to work with.
In my experience, the best horses I've ever had were the ones that I knew I had to have when I saw them, something in their eyes maybe. A couple have been a bit of a hand full to begin with, but I've never regretted a purchase like that. Probably due in part to my attitude about the horse I would guess.

Well, I picked up my yard sign today. Nothing as spectacular as yours but I got 5 of them. I'm going to set one up tonight when I get back from Aikido. I thought about climbing on the roof and anchoring them to the siding. I still may but I better wait for light. I wonder how long it will stay up:')

Hey, I wanted to tell you how good the mare is doing. I've been keeping her tied up from time to time and pasturing her separately from the other horses and she's like a different animal. I've also spent a little extra time with her, giving her treats and scratching her itchy spots (I'm sucking up to her so she'll prefer to be with me instead of her herdmates).
I sure appreciate yours and everybody else's suggestions. They all helped.

We got the other door installed in the barn today. Unfortunately, Hair is not feeling well, and has hit the couch already.

I was reading through the posts and I gotta jump in here on this one. You are exactly right!! Whenever I was iffy about a horse I always regretted the purchase. When I went to see Tuffy I rode him for 5 minutes and said I'll take him. I just knew. He has a permanent home with me. The palomino mare I bought for my daughter I didn't even have to get on, I watched someone else ride her and said I'll take her. I must have ridden 50 horses in the last 8 months or so and I can usually tell in the first 5 minutes if it's a horse I'll be seriously interested in. I drove more than an hour and a half to see a horse that looked and sounded really nice. When I got there they were already riding the horse and had him in a dripping, lathered up sweat. If I hadn't of driven so far I would have turned around and walked away. Those people must have thought I was a total moron.
