The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Yeah, the Lord really blessed me moving me here, but it can spoil you too. My horses don't get hauled enough like they should. Having my own arena and all this, always seems silly to haul, but that isn't good for the horses.

Oh I forgot to add about the V rocks. That little rock laying at the bottom of the V was one I finally got off and jammed in the point after one of the incidences. I've noticed it's come out, problably from the ground washing out under it. But I stay off to one side now.

I thought that today too when I finally downloaded it. At the time, I was watching to see if she was okay and trying to convince a loose horse I was an okay person, so I didn't realized I'd caught the beginning of the action.

She's a young girl, very game and even entered the stick horse competitions :) She landed and bounced hard, knocked the breath out of her, but left the arena thumbs up.

I thought I'd send her a copy in a couple of days when she gets the taste of the arena out of her mouth.

Those are the kind of shows I would like to go too. More relaxed then a class A.

Hope the girl is OK.

Yeah, I know I'm very fortunate to live with so much open country around. Not many places around like that left here.

Our autumns are not as pretty as some areas get, mostly the trees just turn brown, but every once in a while you see a bright yellow or red, that looks pretty mixed in the brown and green.

Very seldom do I miss the trees and creeks but your pictures sure do make me feel deprived :)

Our Autumns aren't very colorful either... Mostly evergreens, and the deciduous trees like alders turn more sickly than pretty.

We don't get it here. We are going to the lake next weekend. We go thru such pretty country. Yawn. I need to get up and clean house. My son wanted me to watch the boys so they could go out tonight. I told him after the boys went to sleep. Yesterday the two year old got into my nair and put it in his hait:'( No problem, they are putting them to bed NOW! Kids screaming. Be back later.

Hmm...does look like a blueberry...but it really isn't the season!

Maybe a hawthorn?

I didn't think it was the right season either. I just wondered if blueberries in the wild ripened later. But the black berries ripen in June when they're selling them in town.

That hawthorne looks alot like it. That is the only place I have ever seen them out there is this one spot.

That girl got bucked off that palomino? I bet she was just mortified. My daughter and I just finished riding. Herd Bound palomino was awesome, Tuffy was still being a buckethead. I really need to ride him more often.

That lethal white thing is something you have a problem with when crossing an overo to an overo. It's a crap shoot, not something that happens every time but heartbreaking when it does.

You are welcome. That guy's response was totally off the mark and completely out of line. I was infuriated reading it.

I think you're right about her pride being hurt the most.

Thanks for the information on the lethal white. I don't have paints so I can't ever remember what cross it is.

Buckethead is a term I'll have to remember, it sounds much nicer than the ones I generally use :)

Dear friends (if I might be so bold as to address you this way),

I want to thank you all for your heartfelt advice, compassionate solutions and great understanding. I am sick with the flu on top of all this so the advice I have gotten is taken a bit longer to digest (no condolenses necessary, please, it goes with the territory. You're under tons of stress, immune system goes, you get sick, sickness is the last thing you need because you need all your wits about you to make a sound decision. Go figure, right?)

The point is your advice was really great. The free lease is a plan of last resort but it's not the worst option. I just have to weigh it against having the negotiating cards in my hand right now (both financial and time-wise) but that doesnt solve the EMOTIONAL bond that I have with these horses so getting the top deal is a horse traders mentality and I have long ago given up trying to think of these two as simply chattel. (The next two that I train though I swear, I will NOT get emotionally involved!)

My point is, thank you all for giving of yourself to help me with my plight. I not only get the wisdom of the freeper community but I get the "horse loving" thing as an unbelievable bonus.

It just occured to me to use this chance to give some personal info on this horse in case anyone knows of a person who wants a free lease or, perferably, lease in exchange for board ($155.00 per month.) I live in mid-GA, near the Perry Georgia National Fairgrounds,
