The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

Eddie just called me. He was out riding Okie. He doesn't like that "black cinch" that came with his saddle hehe. He's says it slips and decided he will take me up on the felt one I offered him .

I went to Western Hills, graduated in '80.

I think I have a problem. I just bought this lovely palomino mare for my 15 yo daughter, thinking she was a near perfect kid horse. I rode her, my daughter rode her, she seems perfect. Well, she seems to be getting more herd bound by the day and I despise a herd bound horse. She's perfect in every other way, how can I fix this? Will pasturing her alone help, even though there are horses on the other side of the fence? She's in the barn by herself tonight and I closed up the window to her stall because she wouldn't shut up. HELP ME!!! I swear, if this mare is nuts, I'm suing the seller. At the very least, she'll have to spend a bunch of money defending herself.

I'm fairly new at this and was having the same problem. Becky has some excellent posts to me about this if you scroll back. Neither one of mine seemed to care for the pasture and both were herdbound (or barn sour) to the horses in stalls. The gelding was the worse. The mare next to him and a stallion would scream at him when he was out. Keeping mine out of the barn working wonders.

I'll catch yall later. Off to aikido.

He's a packer and has been terrific for my kids. Getting very old now, cushings, chronic founder, etc.

I love New England, and everything about it. (Except for the politics) I feel very fortunate to have grown up here, and I would like to stay if at all possible.

She was 5 in August. Your grandson looks like he is having a ball. Thats the way to do it, start them out young.

What a pain if they get the cribbing habit! I've seen them to a lot of damage to barns and fences in a hurry, too. Luckily, Cyn doesn't appear to have this habit.... Which is good, because we have a lot of untreated wood around.

Here's pics of barn progress...

Below: Again... Here is progress as of yesterday. Moved much of the hay to Bay's old stall in the back there, put up the wall down the middle...

Below: Today, finished the wall and installed the feeders and the mangers. The opening where the feeders are was a design-on-the-fly idea... thought we could easily pour the grain in through those holes from the outside.

Bay checks it out....

Pony checks it out coming out from her old stall into the new area. There will be rails defining the two new stalls where that new post is, and all three stalls will open to the outside into the lean to.

She's great and I like the horse. I would love to have someone close to me that wanted to train and show in gamed events.

Your grandson looks like he is having a ball.

It was his first and last day of camp. He suffered all day thru films and lectures to get there and then they couldn't get his stirrups adjusted and finally just put him on. He was thrilled.
