Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
Mine was a little Egyptian Arab stallion. He's about 14 here.
He was cool.... and had always been a show horse and well socialized and was really easy to be around.

A bucking horse is a scary thing, that's for sure. Especially when it happens for no apparent reason. A girlfriend of mine was giving one of her non-horsey friends a riding lesson on her 17h TB gelding. The horse was fine, had a great lesson and right at the end, took off bucking like he'd been electrocuted. Poor girl got bucked off that tall horse and I don't think she ever got on again. My girlfriend was flabbergasted, the horse had never done anything like that before and she had him for years. She was thinking that he might have gotten stung by a bee. Any way about it, you couldn't pay me enough money to get on that horse!!
I haven't had time to sit down and figure it all out yet, but I will. I'm going on a field trip today to the Fort Worth Zoo, with my son, so I'll be out of pocket all day. But don't worry, I'll bore everyone here with lots of pictures!
What was your mare's problem? Did she buck? Aren't we funny, trying to keep a horse that we know we shouldn't be on? What is it about horse people that we just hate to give up? I sure hated to sell that colt but he's now where he needs to be, barrel racing.

I have finally come to the conclusion that the horse was having seizures. Every once in awhile, when you first got on her, or even right after you pulled the cinch, she would fling her self back and forth, like a cutting horse, then fall over on her side and be stiff for awhile. Then she would get up and be fine.
I did competitive trail riding on her for 5 years, and she was great. Lots of stamina, calm about horses passing, would rest at the vet check points like she should, but just every now and again she had these fits. Fell over with me at least 3 times, and then several times after saddling.
I'd like to take her to one of these new chiropratior vets. I think something in her back or neck is out of whack and if the saddle or my weight sat on it just right it cause a seizure.

No, but there is no evidence from her geneology that she has Impressive in her. We have considered that. So far the filly we got out of her shows no sign of this problem. I've waited awhile before breeding her again because of a fear it might be hereditary. The filly is 4 now. The mare was doing this way before that.
I got her when she just turned 3. I have heard since then that she had a very rough breaking in:( Treated pretty rough. I think some damage may have been done then, and now, maybe, scar tissue, bad alignment, etc. could be the problem. Even if we could find a logical reason for all of this, I don't think I'd ever feel safe on her again. Too many bad experiences. Altho for the amount of time I tried there wasn't that many times. She would go a year with no problems at times. Long enough for me to think we had the problem fixed, then wham, for no obvious reason there she'd go again.
After I gave up on her, my son tried roping on her. She did it more with him. Makes me wonder if the heavier saddle and rider were the cause.
I have 2 good horses now and she makes a great brood mare, so I at least still have her. When we bring her home to breed her, I always stand around staring at her, thinking, I wonder if she'd be OK now:). It's good we have pasture to send her too where I don't have to look at her too much. I'd probably keep trying, but I'm afraid that would be a mistake.

What a story. Everytime I think I've heard everything, here comes something else I hadn't heard. It does sound like seizures. Maybe in training she reared up and fell over backwards, hitting her head on something. At least she's a mare and you can use her for something else. If she was a gelding you'd probably have to make some hard decisions.
Off to the zoo!!
