The FreeRepublic Saddle Club thread - Thread TWO!

Posted on 09/18/2004 6:56:23 AM PDT by HairOfTheDog

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads…. And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?

A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.

I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts… look for it there and wake the thread up!

I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in…. There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics… land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news…. Legislation that might affect horse owners.

So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.

. She acts up again and that's where she's headed. Looking at her the rest of the time you would not have thought it was the same horse. I know what you mean about waiting for her to do it again though:'( No fun. I have only rode her once since then. 3 other riders and myself have ridden her. No problems with any of us. Not sure what happened. She could have just been throwing a fit or a 100 variables. Anyway, I have ran home to Momma. (my trainer) I'm back to lessons awhile to get my confidence back. The trainer told me she's going to teach me what to watch for on any horse so I can stop it from happening again but she thinks it was just a fluke with this horse. We'll see. I watched a young guy riding her today. She did fine. The owner going to have him ride her every day for awhile.

I could have had a spur (haha) of the moment lesson today but I passed. I'm already set up for tomorrow. I'm not scared but somewhat aprehesive and since I like structure it just seem best to stick with what I had planned.

I hope things work out caz I really like this horse. She came right to me again today and when this kid was riding her she kept watching me and trying to walk to me when given the chance. Okie or no other horses near. Then we let her trail with two more riders. She walked off and left them. I didn't see any barn problems either. The trainer thinks I might have had her too hot because I was pouring out the feed and stalling her and it had been about 5 days since I rode her and it was on a Sunday where she wasn't turned out. Who knows? I still think it might have been a Midol problem though. We'll see in a week or so.

"Time to start that 250 hr log book I guess:')"

I think that is the amount of riding time for a horse to be considered finished or reasonably safe. If you ride a lot it would not take long to have that many hours in the saddle. I have ridden four full days straight on a few occaisons and know several riders that have made seven day trips.

I hope your lesson goes really well tomorrow! We didn't ride today.... busy working on horse housing.

Bay watches progress on the new back wall of the new stalls. We installed that new post and half wall this afternoon.

Bays so photogenic:'). I saw a grey today!:') I could have him if I wanted. He looks like he rolled in ink:') An abused horse. Extremely head shy, herd bound and stubborn with turning and does little jibbs(?) Nah, he's pretty but I'll pass :').

You need to go on some all day trail rides. That would be good for you and the horse.

My horse was a three year old when I got her and it would take an all day ride to burn her energy level down. The first couple of hours she would prance and dance sideways but by the end of the ride she was quite docile. : )

He's got a good home. All the kids were crazy about their "poor baby" These school horses here have a good life.
