Thread III: http://www.freerepublic.com/focus/f-chat/1311311/posts |

Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
LOL,,,is what I don't get is why they pee and poop all over it??
Funny story about a round bale, altho it's a bit risque:)
I got a round bale up here one time to feed my mare who we had here to breed to our stud. She was only going to be here for a short while, then back to pasture, so I did not want to start her on the pellets.
Anyway, I thought I'd let my other horses have a bit of it. When I put the stud out there, who to my knowledge had never seen a round bale, well.....it excited him to no end. He'd run over to the panels that seperated him from a gelding, bow up all studdy like then run back to the round bale and mounted it like it was a mare and well....before long it was all over the place. Completly destroyed it in a short time. I was glad he could not be seen from the road. It was really funny. Poor guy, it had been awhile since he had gotten to breed a mare. Guess he was real horny:). Wouldn't be hard to get a donation from him for AIing a mare.

ROTFL! And I thought my dog had put on embarrassing displays in his life ;~D
I'm sure some on this thread are tired of hearing me tote the advantages of complete pellets, but it's something you might consider.
If you have enough pasture for horses to pick at I think pellets are really the way to go. Takes the guess work out of if they are getting the right balance of roughage, the are very high quality roughage, NO waste, no hauling, no storage, no worry of moldy hay, and cost is comparable to hay and grain cost.
They're made by Purina, Purina horse chow 100. I feed 3 x's a day, but you can get by with feeding 2 x's a day. The average horse gets about 12-15 lbs a day. That sounds like alot, but remember they are not getting "hay". The hay is in the pellets.

It was bad:) He was all sweaty and worked up when I finally moved him out of where it was. I mean he really LIKED, that round bale.
Becky
oh dear. :~D
With that thought.... I have to go to town.... back later!
I was reading the Reeve thread, and saw your posts. I didn't know if you knew about this thread. Just a bunch of people who are horse lovers, who exchange stories, pictures of our horses, advise, and just chat.
I have a good morning ping list if you want on let me know.
Becky
See post #1287:)
Becky
Hey thanks!!! I didn't know this was here. Please, do put me on your ping list.
Done:)
Ok, so what kind of riding do you do, what kind of horses do you have, do you board, or keep your own????
Becky
Good morning everyone,
Really sad and shocked to see that we lost Superman. I always believed he would eventually walk again, well he's doing that now.
If I have the energy when I get home from work, I'll scan and post a picture of a foal shedding from chestnut to grey. It is very bizarre looking :)
I just ride for fun and relaxation, nothing specific, bareback with a pad, mostly. I got this great bareback pad off of ebay. Thick and soft, d -rings for a breast collar and you use a regular english girth with it. It was shipped from Canada. I have 2 paints, 1 palomino QH and a Connemara pony. The pony is old and retired. I keep them at home, we live on about 30 acres.
What kind of riding do you do? This is sure a fun way to spend a rainy, muddy day, thanks so much for pointing me here.
Great.
I was surprised when the guy told me this horse was a roan, altho I own a roan, I just assumed that this one was a gray because of the mix of white in the black.
Once a gray foal sheds it's foal coat it can still be very dark right? Doesn't it take some years for them to be gray? or is it different with each horse?
Becky
Rainy, muddy day is the reason I'm here this time of day. I'm usually riding by now.
I have Quarter horses, and mostly trail ride. I live where I can trail ride. My son ropes, my daughter and daughter in law do barrels, poles, etc. I am now in the process of learning to run barrels. I started riding late in life:), and have never gotten use to real speed. I can do the barrels correctly, just not fast enough yet to compete seriously, but I'm hoping to get there. It's hard to do at 50:)
Becky
I did high school barrel racing and it was alot of fun.
I'm gonna have to sign off the computer for a while. I have a barn cat that's 3 legged lame that I need to run to the vet. He's my best mouser so I need to get him fixed!
Rusty the roan is my horse that I'm learning barrels on, and Rocky, the buckskin, our stud:
And Harley, my palomino who I bought to resale:

how do you post pictures?
You first have to post them to a host site so you can get a URL address. York.com is a free hosting site. Go there and follow the directions to get them posted there. Once you have done that, click on the thumbnail size, it will give you an enlarged view of the picture, then right click on the bigger picture, that will pop up a window, click on "properties" another window will pop up. Copy the URL address.
Then go to a posting comment on FR. the html is ~img src=" paste theURL address here"~. Instead of using ~ at the beginning and end use <> these, like you would for a paragragh. Be sure to us P's between pictures and captions. Be sure to enclose the URL address in " ". Make sense. It sounds complicated but we have talked alot of posters thru it. If the pictures don't show up when you preview it you don't have it right, but keep trying we love pictures.
Becky
Maybe they will be fine and have manners that the queen of England would be proud of - you never know.
PS (If I get round bales I have to get a feeder - if I get a feeder I have to get a new tractor - if I get a new tractor I have to get a new barn - if I get a new barn I will have more room for more horses - and if I buy more horses than I better go buy some more round bales.
