Free Republic has a lot of horse people that have found each other on other threads . And since we all like to talk horses, how about a thread where it is not off-topic, but is THE topic?
A few of us thought it would be interesting and informative to have a chat thread where we can share ideas, ask for input from other horsemen, and talk about our riding and horse-keeping. We have a lot of different kinds of riders and horses, and a lot to share. In the last thread we had a great time and were a great help to each other working through lessons and training, horse lamenesses and illnesses, questions and challenges and always just our stories we like to tell.
I always have a link to this thread on my profile page, so if you have something to say and can't find the thread in latest posts look for it there and wake the thread up!
I also have a ping list for horse threads that are of interest, and Becky pings everyone most mornings. Let Becky (Paynoattentionmanbehindthecurtain) and/or me know if you would like to be on the ping list. As FreeRepublic is a political site, our politics and other issues will probably blend in . There are many issues for horsemen that touch politics land use, animal rights/abuse cases that make the news . Legislation that might affect horse owners.
So... like the last thread, this is intended as fun place to come and share stories, pictures, questions and chit-chat, unguided and unmoderated and that we come together here as friends. There are lots of ways of doing things and we all have our quirks, tricks and specialties that are neat to learn about.
I'm going to be out of here this weekend too. (second retreat at the Island). I hope I can get back into my routine Monday.
Great pictures!!! She is lovely.... looks like she 'belongs" with you two.... Makes Me jealous that My dh doesn't ride....but I do enjoy riding with My kids.... I especially love the shot with the horse's ears in the foreground.....Plan to post pix of My new guy later today....
Good morning! I look forward to the pics from both you and beaker today but I won't be home to see them till tonight!
Good morning, btw.... Another long day today, hopefully talk tonight.
Greetings from sunny, warm,South Padre Island where it's chilly and raining. There isn't much beach today. Mathew stirring up the waters. I just watched a big tanker head out into the ocean. Impressive:')
Checking out the other two...
Close up of those "baby blues"
And with another neighbor friend who had NEVER ridden before - dd is riding bareback to "show off" LOL
I'M not necessarily looking for another C naME as I already get the other 2 Mixed up!!! LOL After reading the story of the Medicine Hat Paint - I was kinda leaning toward soMething Indian - but could change if the perfect naMe caMe along -
Oh, he's beautiful! I had read about medicine paints but books don't do um justice.
Thank you! We were clueless about Medicine Hat's until this one came along - (wonderful thing, the internet.....) I read that they were considered sacred by several Indian tribes - only the Chief could routinely ride one - but warriors could ride them into battle - they believed they could not be harmed if they were riding a Medicine Hat - they often painted symbols on them(since they are mainly white) .... and they call the color on their heads a "war bonnet"......
Good morning.
Momto2: Nice horse:)
Anyone riding today?
Becky
Not sure if we'll be able to ride today... still pretty rainy out, and it's not supposed to clear up much until overnight.
GREAT set of pics and very pretty new horse! I like that new gelding! I think he's pretty! Thanks for sharing them!
Yeah - we aren't sure about riding. I am sure it is muddy out.... for now, we are going out to breakfast.
We had rain here the last two days. Today look's good.
Becky
Morning. Not today :')
I have a few questions I hope you experienced people can help me with....if I pasture my horse next summer, does he need a companion? Also he is only let out at the stables for about 2 hours of pasture. Will he get sick from eating all that grass 24/7?
Becky - we hope to ride later today - we went out for about an hour yesterday .... it was GORGEOUS in the woods - perfect temperature......Hope everyone has such a nice day....
I spoke to soon:(, it has clouded up here and looks like rain. I hate riding in rain, so I'm waiting awhile to see what it does.
No you don't have to have a companion for your horse.
Putting a horse out on rich spring grass if the are not use to it can cause some problems. If they're on the pasture before the spring grass comes in, they would probably be alright. You can either turn them out a little at a time to adjust them to it, or put them out early early spring so they are there as it grows and they adjust slowly on their own.
If you're going to wean them onto full pasture time, I'd increase their hay intake too. Stretch their stomachs. Around here, most stable give 2 flakes in the morning and 2 in the evenings. A horses stomach ajusts (shrinks) to the space it needs for that amount. If they are suddenly turned out on all they want they will gorge and their stomach will overload, and you know how that can feel:), so a horse could colic from that.
Suddenly being turned out on rich pasture if they're not use to it, can also bring on founder. Heck they can founder on it even if they are use to it. Watch their weight. It they start gaining lots of weight get them off the pasture.
Becky
Probably depends on what is in the pasture, and the tendency of your horse - our friend has an Arab gelding - she had to put a grazing muzzle on him for awhile this summer because vet said he was eating too much.... after the lushest of the grass was over - she removed it and he is fine....
Look forward to reading the answers of the experienced horse folks on here...
