Ugh. Cold from hell over here *SNIFF hack*

But I DID find a good alternative to Nyquil. It's from Tylenol, new stuff called Tylenol Cold & Flu Severe Nighttine. Little bottle (8oz) of this blue liquid. Costs about $5.50 at WalMart.

GOOD STUFF lemme tell ya. First off each dose has 1000mg Tylenol (no that's not a typo), 60mg of the main ingredient in Sudafed, cough suppressant, and antihistamine. What's even better is that it tastes like peppermint. (I have to hold my nose when I take Nyquil or it'll make me gag, no matter if it's green or red) This new stuff knocks me out within an hour of taking it and I sleep like a baby through the night (we're talking 10pm-6:30am or whenever my kids decide to wake me up)

In other news...still haven't heard from hubby. He was evacuated from NAS Pensacola sometime Tues and that morning was the last time I talked to him. GAH. He WAS due to graduate from his school Oct 26 but well that seems to have gone out the window...

Kids are doing good in school. Youngest son Robbie had a horrid first day (that whole separation anxiety thing) but has since greatly improved.

Ok I'm going to go finish my coffee and figure out what to do with the rest of my day. cheers...

Morning! We've had trouble with the baby having high fevers on and off all summer. Ibuprofen (Motrin) works better than acetominophen (Tylenol) and is also easier to find in a dye-free formula.

I'm not sure what's been causing all of it ... colds, allergies, ear infection ... after a couple rounds of antibiotics, we decided we would just treat the fevers and wait, and it always goes away eventually. I wipe his ears out with tea-tree oil, too.

Nyquil has that effect on me as well. I usually ride the cold out myself. Meds have the habit of making me act like a real crazy person. I'm going to keep an eye out for the med you mentioned, though...I need to find something that will knock my KIDS out! We're running on no sleep right now.

Keep me posted about your hubby, how scary that must be for you. Florida just keeps getting smacked.

There's an instrument in most doctors' offices, I'm not sure what its called, but it sends a pulse through the ear and measures vibrations of the middle ear membrane. I strongly urge you to have your doc check your son's ears this way, if he can. Its a non-invasive way of checking the maturity of the inner ear tubes, I think. Both of my older sons' ears "flatlined"--no vibration at all. Josh was constantly sick with recurring ear infections due to immature tubes. David was almost never sick, but it turned out he was almost completely deaf. They both have surgically implanted tubes now and they haven't had a single ear infection since, with the added bonus that they can now hear when I'm bossing them around. Surgery should never be the first solution, but if your doc checks the status of your son's ears this way at least you'll know if a consult with an ENT is in order.

God bless Dr. Anthony Chebli, our wonderful family doctor who died suddenly this past spring at the age of 52. My sons can hear because of him. Wonderful, wonderful man. sniff

Thanks, I'll mention that to Dr. Barbara next time we're in for something. James can obviously hear (He says "Hiya" "Daddy" and "Brother"), but any time we can rule out a potential problem, that's good!

Pediacare nighttime for the girls. Knocks them right out. During the day, the chewable Sudafed. I have to say that since the homeschooling has started, they are not sick like they used to be. This is a blessing because when the little one gets a cold, she also gets a UTC. They talked about an everyday antibiotic for her and I was not happy with that. We are just winging it (she hasn't had one since March).

We have a big problem because both girls are allergic to mosquito bites. Either hives or blisters from them. Benedryl is a mainstay in our house.

For me, three shots of Irish Creme in Coffee. Cures everything.

Chicken noodle soup with plenty of garlic and hot peppers.

Sudafed is your friend. If you take enough, it will lower your chances of a sinus infection by keeping everything open.

Good morning.

I would be a whole lot easier for me to share my OTC preferences if I cuold get Jax to take some of them. Criminy, but the child is stubborn.

Pseudoephedrine, the main med in Sudafed, works great for my kids during the day but I can't give it to them at night. They act like, I don't know...hummingbirds on acid. I gave Pediacare Nighttime to my toddler for the first time last night. It dried him out enough to let him sleep, but he still had coughing spells through the night which kept ME up.

Garlic is great for colds, with the only unfortunate side effect being, what's the genteel word...increased flatulence. I must admit, I have made the dog get up and leave the room on occasion.

Net, isn't there some kind of juice that naturally and quickly clears up UTCs? For some reason I'm thinking its cranberry juice.

Have you tried any of the new chewables that are out? I told the boys they were "candy medicine" and they fell for it hook, line, and sinker.

Unfortunately, they don't really seem to work very well!

A heavy slathering of good old fashioned Vicks Vapor rub does help control nighttime coughing.

Yes! However, getting it into a four year old is next to impossible. She will do Cran-Apple but it is still a fight.

Plenty of water is actually the best. We have her urinate after baths and swimming. However, taking her sister out of the germ breeding ground of school has done wonders. Daddy came home with a cold and no one got it. I really think that the girls got a chance to build up their immunities without the constant exposure to other sick kids.
For two years (I'm not kidding), someone was always sick. Now it is a joy!

Jax was complianing about a headache and sore throat last night so I grabbed the bottle of children's motrin - grape flavored chewables - she immediately felt better, and I hadn't even openned the bottle.

I have stooped as low as putting liquid meds into juice just to get some of it into her.

Thank goodness she is generally healthy as a horse and the need for meds doesn't happen often.

Right now, all of us are suffering from the change of weather allergy syptoms.

I have to practically hold down my older son JJ to give him meds. I'm just thankful that now he's old enough for chewables-lot less messy.

Robbie, on the other hand, is like 'I need medicine mama' and drinks it from the dosage cup by himself.

I've found that the Triaminic Vapor Patch works for my kids coughs. Just make sure you put it on their chest AFTER they fall asleep cause otherwise they'll just rip it off and play with it *L*
