Newbie Has Some Questions

I am fairly new to the site. I think I understand what Pinging is all about but have yet to figure out what a Bump is. Can someone explain? Any other site customs I should know about?

Why yes I do, and I don't think it's very nice of you to accuse me of that. I tried searching the archives for an explanation and couldn't find anything, so I asked the question. If I was truly into vanity posting, I would have posted it to breaking news rather than misc. I didn't accuse you of anything. Your original post came up under News/Activism. The Mods have since moved it to Chat where it belongs.

A Bump To The Top is just saying that you think a post is great, and important....as if Muttly posted it...just for example.
This will happen to you a lot, as is evidenced by the poor, innocent little Muttly FOOTPRINT at the upper right corner of your screen. This may serve as a reminder that Muttly likes to be fed, petted, and run around with.
Some say that the footprint is for something else, but Muttly couldn't say, because the one time he clicked on it, something did happen, so he ran away.
Also, you may find it useful to lay in a large supply of tinfoil, cheese, moose, series, Hatt-Baby, and kibble...just in case somebody sets you up the bomb.

Whew! OK, I'm feeling better now. I don't know how it got posted to news/activism. I specifically posted it to misc. Weird. I suppose I'll get the hang of it eventually. Sorry for snapping--it's a visceral reaction I have to OSHA, the agency. I have to deal with them all the time and they tend to drive me NUTS!!!!!!
