Anyone have a tried and true way of killing fire ants? I bought some white, nasty powder from Ortho and all it did was make the ants move their mound. After 5 attempts, I poured boiling water on them. Killed them all, along with a patch of my grass. Any suggestions would be welcomed.
What cowtowney said, plus:
There are some products with the ingredient "Conserve" in them. It's a natural bacteria that kills the ants from the inside out. You can use it on mounds AND broadcast it. It takes some days to kill them all but it works great and isn't poison (except to the ants..heh heh). Howard Garrett rocks, btw.
Oh, and cowtowney, prepare to be flamed for your views.
I guess the queen retains a bit of water?
''cream of wheat''!! I always thought my mother was trying to poison me with that stuff.

KEWL!
But... did it kill the ants?

Stick a copy of Clinton's book down their hole...
I use Diazinon for ants and grubs - I couldn't find where it was outlawed - have you a reference?
bump for non lethal fire ant killer
(to use around the bird feeder)
Orange oil also works. It is environmentally safe as well.
Forget Amdro etc. Go to a farm chimical supplier and buy a gallon of Permethrin Pro, costs about $100 and makes 100 gallons of spray. Will kill them dead. Can be used inside & out and is safe for humans, pets and birds. Works on roaches, fleas, etc.
I wonder what would happen if one rented a steam cleaner and plunged the spike deep into the ground...
You have fire ants in Turkiye????
Could you send some to Mecca...
There is a product called "Over and Out" is contains fipronil, a long lasting, low-toxicity insecticide. It is the ingredient in many cat and dog flea drops. So you don't have to worry about it hurting animals or children. The only thing that it may harm is water birds such as ducks. It does not kill the ants quickly so you may not think it is working but the ants will disappear over a 1-3 week period and stay gone for at least 4 months. It is best to treat the individual mounds AND broadcast spread the entire yard. Depending on where you live, you may still be able to treat now. It works best if you make the first application in early Spring and a second application in mid-Summer. Over and Out is a vailable at Lowes.
CAYENNE PEPPER!!! IT CURES EVERYTHING, BUT IS A SECRET THAT DOCTORS DON'T EVEN KNOW!!!!!
Rumor has it they came back in a few weeks, after the landscaper left.
I've had good luck getting rid of black ants by using Borax (yep - I know that it's a laundry soap - but it works and is natural)
boiling water, and then wait about 10-15 minutes, and another dose of boiling water. While that should kill them, it will kill the grass too.
Amdro works well.
I went around killing fire ants last night. Had one mound about 4 feet long, but not very tall, and lots of little mounds away from it. I'll bet they're all connected. Creepy to think about them, millions of them, under the ground.
