Hmmm. I always thought it was from Sumerian. GOL was demon or monster or---something, no?

Ok! (Checked muh notes.) Gul was Sumerian for destroy, wreck, mess up. It got into Semitic languages, e.g. "al-gul" the demon. Our "ghoul" from the same.
