The iPod's Big Brother
Apple's latest computer is as cool and sleek as its best-selling music player

By CHRIS TAYLOR

Monday, Sep. 13, 2004

The best way to describe Apple's iMac G5, which goes on sale later this month, is to say it looks like an iPod on growth hormones. It's what you'd get if you stretched the pocket-size music player until it was 17 in. wide and 2 in. deep, squished a supercomputer into the casing and mounted the whole thing on a metal stand. The resemblance is not coincidental. More people buy iPods than iMacs these days, and Apple admits that this third-generation iMac is its best shot at luring millions of iPod owners further into Mac world — and inching up its current 3% share of the Windows-dominated market.

Will the strategy work? Only if those iPod owners open their wallets. The new iMac starts at $1,300 for the smaller model with a 17in. screen and goes up to $1,900 for the 20in. screen. That's less than its predecessors but a bit more than the $250 to $500 iPods.

Still, what you get for that money is quite possibly the coolest personal computer yet created. The cool is more than merely aesthetic. Unlike a lot of previous Mac machines, on which you could almost fry an egg, the iMac G5's beautiful white surface does not get noticeably hot. Nor, at a whisper-quiet 25 decibels, does it make enough noise for most people to hear, let alone those who have been blasting their eardrums with the iPod.

Designer Jonathan Ive, who shaped the original iMac and iPod, has gone as minimalist as possible with this machine. There is no separate computer tower or power supply; everything is contained in the display. CDs and DVDs slot in on the side of the screen. The power button is on the back. The speakers are hidden on the bottom, designed to bounce sound off your desk. Throw in the optional Bluetooth wireless keyboard and mouse, and the whole thing needs only one cable, the power cord. A minor gripe is that those don't come as standard; nor does Apple's wireless Internet card, the Airport. Who wouldn't want to do everything wirelessly with a computer like this?

If Apple's history is any guide, most computers sold over the next four years will have this clean, all-in-one display look. That history also suggests that very few of them will be iMacs. Apple is notorious for not having the supply to keep up with demand. Indeed, the release of this iMac was delayed by a shortage of the superfast G5 chips. At least iPod owners will have something to listen to while they wait.

I wish I could buy interesting technology without financing liberal [deleted] from the Left Coast. Ah well, I can always upgrade my Dell.

Well you might succeed if you load Linux on it instead of the product of that liberal Billgatesionaire...

That part always seems to get lost on those anti-mac PC types.

I'm still using my old Rev. B bondi blue iMac, and I love it. HOWEVER, I just may have to upgrade to this G5. I only have 593 MB left on my hard drive!

Does anyone know if Delorme makes a Street Atlas USA for Mac? When I bought my Mac 2 1/2 years ago, an ad for Street Atlas for Mac was included. But they don't answer emails and their ad on the net doesn't include a program for Mac.

No matter what you buy, your going to finance somebody you don't like. Some of the money is going to end up in China either way. I have switched to Macs and am glad I did. I may not agree with the politics of the people who design or build Macs, but it's no different than buying a car made in Detroit by union democrats or one made in Mexico or Canada. They can't tell me how to use any of those products.

I love my 15" adjustable screen iMac but I may buy a 17" or 20" while they are available. I hate to say it but this new iMac reminds me of a Etch A Sketch. And why does a iPod cost $500...

It doesn't... it costs $400... and they are selling every one they can manufacture.

I read up a bit more on this. As usual, Apple's attention to detail is insane. The power button is the only thing raised on the back so it's easy to feel to press, plus it's directly opposite the power light. They use the speaker grilles for cooling. The base legs are made so the keyboard stows underneath. The arm connects at center of gravity for perfect tilting, plus the motion is dampened so it stays exactly where you stopped pushing it. And more....

I first realized Apple paid more attention to deal than any other company when they made the monitor power light and Cube power light synch when pulsating in sleep mode.

I saw this thing and the first thing that came into my mind was 'CUBE' - and when I first saw it at MW/NYC. I'm planning on holding-off at least until I see one taken apart to see what it's like inside and if One can RAM it up by Oneself or put a higher-capacity drive in it or change the CD/DVD like can be done with the traditional cases.

I may even pick up a refurbed 'traditional' case one if the lemmings all gravitate toward this new one. Just because Apple CAN mash everything into a flatscreen or a cube doesn't necessarily mean it's a Good Thing to have done so.
