Advice needed: A HUGE Blue Heron just ate my prized Koi and Goldfish!
Posted on 09/03/2004 5:48:01 PM PDT by Pukin Dog
I hate to break up this big news day with a personal request, but I need some advice from anyone who knows about how to prevent a Blue Heron from attacking my Koi pond?
I just arrived home to find this HUGE Blue Heron standing in the middle of my pond, swallowing what I discovered to be the last of my (very expensive) Koi. All my fish, some costing me between $100 and $300 are gone.
The Heron just lifted off with a belly full of fish; an amazing site, as this thing had to have a 6'ft wing span, and is now sitting on the roof of my house. My guess is that the Frogs are next?
I live in Mira Mesa, jogging distance to MCAS Miramar. What the hell is a bird like that doing out here anyway? Suggestions are welcome.

Have you tried using a netting? Or string across the pond? Freepmail your private email addy and I'll forward it to my area's koi club prez. She had this problem a while back.

I am so sorry to hear that! I don't know a damn thing about birds, so I'm pinging Hap, who knows about littler ones.

Buy real cheap fish for your pet Heron.

Wow! Too bad about your koi. We have blue herons here and I have seen them eat 14" bass. I can't tell you what to do, but maybe it escaped from the zoo?

Perhaps it was going to set him free. AKA Little Nemo.

I would think you would need some kind of net over the pond. Or you could try an owl or a BIG snake decoy.
I have blue herons here as well. Kingfishers can also take a pretty good sized fish.

Sorry, I am really sorry, but I initially LOL as I read this. It is not a joke however. My suggestion is to scoop up whatever fish survived, keep them indoors in an aquarium tonight, and go to the animal shelter tomarrow to get a nice homeless noist mutt to protect your very expensive heron chow, I meant koi pond.

Get a Goose gun if he's flying. If you can sneak up on him, hit him with a big rock.
