The Hobbit Hole XV - Pass them by! Pass them by!
See our freeper.the-hobbit-hole.net home page! ^

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Pass them by! Pass them by!

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Getting up early when it's dark is awfully hard.

Seems like it's much easier to do in the summer when the sun's already up that early.

I have the added pressure of having to make sure Jr. is up to catch the bus. If I get him up at 6:00, I can get to the gym by 6:30. I argue with myself a lot about going back to bed. But once I'm out the door, or at least at the gym, I'm always glad I did it.

Yeah, that's my main problem. The alarm will go off...and I lie there and say to myself "Self, do you REALLY want to get up out of this nice warm bed to walk in the cold or on the boring ol' treadmill? Wouldn't it be sooo much nicer and easier to just sleep for another half an hour?"

And lately, I've been bad about giving in, though usually I fit in at least a quick walk in the evening.

But I feel so much better when I DON'T give in.

uh! stupid windows! It can't mount two USB storage devices apparently. Grrrr. This is why at home I do all my real work on a Mac. 'Drive letters' Ha! Might as well name them with cuneiform.

I've never had any trouble mounting two USB devices... and I don't do Macs. Since I'm not into graphics, I need a real computer...

Of course, my opinion that Windows actually has some upsides is rather unpopular around the department. However since I'm the Windows tech they humor me.

I don't like Macs...

Oh, and as for the graphics thing...my freeper brother just started his own graphic design business. He won't use Macs neither.

But...I know they have hardcore supporters. So they must have some benefits. But I haven't seen anything to make me think they can do anything better than PCs, except that no one has bothered to try to infect 'em with anything recently. < /rant >

I don't care! We don't support 'em. So you can have a Mac but you can't ask us for help, heh heh.

*sigh*

We have several Mac labs on campus. And the education and graphics design folks almost all have Macs.

Considering that Macs "never break", you should see what our helpdesk ticket log looks like...

Hehehe...

Oh, we got a reprieve from SP2 yesterday. Turns out it makes accessing a certain web program impossible, so we're waiting until the college central technical people have a solution. Which is good.

We've been installing it for some time now...no problems so far. But maybe we got lucky, I dunno.

Hm...tomorrow is the faculty / staff yard sale here. I wonder if someone might be selling an old bookcase...I should check!

After all, more shelf space means an excuse to buy more books. Like I need any excuse...but...

Let me guess, many issues because they are really old macs and no one knows how to use them. These days mac are basically just Unix on good hardware with an apple front end. That 'macs are better for graphics' things is a myth nowadays. It is mainly that graphical&design oriented people prefer a nice looking front end on their OS. At home my two macs do all my real work because they network more reliably than my PC and are much easier to change configuration. I have the PC to play games and very rarely to do some embedded programing. I even prefer the Mac version of Microsoft Office. I think they spent extra time debugging it.

It appears my work PC as decided it will not mount one of my USB pen drives. I don't know why because my XP machine at home mounted it just fine last night. It is probably something to do with an older model USB controller or the settings that the company configures in XP not wanting to read the format I am using on it.

Nope, brand new Macs that took much of our budget for this year...a sore point. And they don't network nearly as well as the PCs - another sore point.

But OS X is a zillion times better in that regard. They've almost got it right.
