Who's in Your Daughter's Dressing Room?
8-31-04 | Self

Posted on 08/31/2004 7:36:35 AM PDT by Paved Paradise

I have noticed an alarming trend - young men manning the dressing rooms at the shops where the young girls/women buy their clothing.

In two of my experiences, the dressing rooms were attended by a young MAN. One store, Delia's, is a clothing store for girls/women! Delia's dressing rooms do have doors. In the case of Hollister's, I complained to the manager on duty and he told me the dressing room is unisex and they will have a guy or gal there watching. Incidentally, their changing rooms have curtains and one can see through them somewhat - plus as anyone with experience knows, the curtains don't close perfectly. He said it doesn't matter. I told him it matters very much as men and women are wired very differently and a young man standing there would be tempted to look and engage in voyeurism.

Help! Can I complain to someone besides the management? Does anyone else out there feel the same way. I am appalled!

Don't shop there. Send a letter to the corporate people and tell them why you will no longer shop there. Don't waste your time on the local manager.

The squeaky wheel wheel gets the greese. You can write a letter to upper management to see of they respond. You can also call a reporter at the women's section (living, society, whatever your paper calls it). Suggest that the reporter do a feature on the local changing rooms. Explain what is wrong at that particular one. A good writer could write up a pretty funny and interesting expose. If you can talk her into, she can generate some bad publicity, which might prompt the store to improve its changing rooms.

You can also stop shopping there.

I imagine that this owner doesn't not want to get sued for discrimination by the Johnny Edwards crowd.

You never know this "male" may work there for a discount on clothes.

Um...are they hiring? ;-)

On a serious note, this isn't right. Why would a company do this?

The men in question are probably gay. I mean comeon how many straight men are going to want to work in a woman's cloting store?

I'm just as shocked at what kind of clothes go into these dressing rooms as the people who attend them.. you can't buy school clothes for a young girl anymore that don't look like jr. hooker clothes...

Eh, simple.
Don't shop there, if you don't like their policies.

But they are a private company, and can run it as they see fit.

If the commission percentage is good enough, a lot of guys would work in a women's clothing store.

I have no idea what exactly you are trying to say, but I was very serious about this post and am very serious about how upset I am at this situation. If you have something more specific to say, please let me know.

Several people posted about not shopping in these stores. Duh! Well, the fact is that I was shopping with my nieces and they had their own money. I was merely chaperone. I personally wouldn't have spent my own money in these stores, but that is not the point. Why is this being allowed is my point?

I'm amazed more people aren't upset about this. And frankly, even if I refuse to shop in a store that does this, I don't think it should be put upon anyone. Also, lots of teens shop without their parents so the parents are clue-less!

"I mean comeone how many straight men are going to work in a woman's clothing store?"

It provides for incredible "dating" opportunities, as does working behind a department store perfume counter. One of the politicos I worked for had a campaign aide who worked such jobs - for extra cash, yes, but mainly for the "extras" such work brought him.

Duh?

I'm telling you they are a private company, with unisex dressing rooms. They can run them as they see fit (as long as they aren't breaking the law).

Has anyone been accused or found guilty of perving on someone changing in this store? You haven't shown any evidence of that.

Incidentally, I take it you are completely opposed to communal dressing rooms?

You know there could be lesbians perving on women in there.
