What Is It? Chevrolet SS

What's Special About It? A modern interpretation of Chevrolet's high-powered sedans of the '60s, the SS combines an ultralow-profile design with some good ol'-fashioned American muscle for a five-passenger sedan that defies classification. An all-aluminum 6.0-liter V8 sends 430 horsepower and 430 pound-feet of torque to the rear wheels via a four-speed automatic. Displacement-on-demand technology allows the high-powered engine to shut down cylinders for better fuel economy while cruising. The suspension is a fully independent design that benefits from driver-adjustable shocks which can provide everyday comfort along with racetrack performance. Massive six-piston brake calipers grab on to 14-inch rotors up front while the rear binders consist of four-piston grabbers and even larger 14.75-inch discs in the rear.

Unfortunately, the GM management is too stupid and schlerotic to ever actually *build* or *sell* a car like this.... or if they do, they will make it as ugly as possible.

Maybe they shouldn't have used the letters 'SS' . . . Libs will start calling it the hitlermobile.

By the way, Hitler was totally gay. I used the SS, the way the pedo priests used altar boys.

I agree with pepper. GM will think its too cool for the average americans. They will "committee" this thing to death, make it look like crap.

The car looks great. When it comes to sharp-looking cars, Bob Lutz is the man (he brought Dodge out of the boxy K-car era). But doesn't GM have the money to develop a five-speed or six-speed automatic transmission? It seems that GM is always behind the curve on technology.

It's fiberglass isn't it, and not real smooth.

GM and Ford both seem to be allergic to selling any decent cars other than the Corvette or new Mustang.

Here's Ford's view of their customers (from an article about the boring new Ford Five Hundred):

While General Motors and the Chrysler group are expanding their lines with rear-drive models, ["executive director for medium and large front-drive and all-wheel-drive platforms" Paul] Mascarenas said: "I'm not sure the customer needs rear-wheel drive."

This car shuts down cylinders when it needs to.

Doesn't come close to this baby, I like the styling on this better than the new corvette style, which sucks by the way.

I don't typically like Corvettes. But I did like the previous version and the new one. I'm more of an Acura NSX person.

To me, they couldn't lose with the new Bel Air. So where is it?

It looks too modern to ever be confused with a 68 Camaro. I am struggling to remember my favorite cars from that time, besides Chevy Impalas. Dodge Chargers, Barracudas, GTO's, etc. This car looks like plastic. I'm sorry, but it doesn't do anything for me. I'll show it to my friend who does restoration, and ask him what he thinks.
