1990: Giap credits faltering will of the US and anti-war movement with Vietnam victory
New York Times Archives [NO LINK] | June 24, 1990 | Stanley Karnow

In this 1990 8-page interview with Stanley Karnow, author of "Vietnam: A History", Communist North Vietnamese General Von Nguyen Giap cites the faltering will of the American government and the rise of the anti-war movement at a critical time as crucial factors in the eventual ascent of the Communist forces in Vietnam.

************************************************************************************

..."We were not strong enough to drive out a half million troops, but that was not our aim"... "Our intention was to break the will of the American Government to continue the war. We were waging a "peoples war" - a la maniere vietnamienne".

....By late 1967, however, Giap also faced a hard choice. The half million United States troops .. were chewing up his forces and his hopes of an early victory seemed dim. But... he also detected a growing antiwar feeling in the United States.. Thus he gambled on a campaign that would break the deadlock...

There might be more specific quotes about VVAW and Kerry in Giap's memoir "How We Won the War" and a Time/Life documentary "The Ten Thousand Days War."

There is a good chance he specifically mentions Kerry. Kerry's picture among VVAW people has some place of honor in a Vietnam museum, IIRC.

Far too many people say we should not drag Vietnam into today's issues. Here is clear evidence IMO that we cannot afford to NOT see "how it was" in the days of Walter Cronkite. How did our forces and allies win all the battles and lose the war, for example?

They did not lose the war.

...he [Giap] gambled on a campaign that would break the deadlock...

He was latter to describe the American press as his most valuable guerrilla.

How are mainstream media employees any different today? The only time they mention 9/11 is to give a count of the number of "hate" crimes committed against the "religion of peace" since that date, it seems to me.
