The Guild 8-22-2004 Surviving Hurricane Charley

Posted on 08/22/2004 8:31:14 AM PDT by BigWaveBetty

Woo hoo! Our cable service was restored late last night! We were very lucky to get our power restored last Sunday just about 48 hrs. after the power went out as Hurricane Charley blew through our town.

We were about a mile and a half from the eye of Charley as it passed over us. My husband, son, father-in-law and I gathered in the main hallway of our home as Charley approached and remained there for about an hour. We peered out as it seemed that the eye was over us because the winds had died down and thought the back end of Charley would come soon. But it never did. Near as we could tell the back end of Charley had dissipated and we left the hallway 15 minutes later.

What a mess! But our family was extremely lucky, no damage to our house just one good size limb hit the truck and added a good sized dent to the passenger door panel. For us just a big mess to clean up and no power. Although the damage was terrible for those poor folks in Charlotte County and beyond, many hurricane veterans say that it could have been worse had it moved slowly and dumped more rain.

Pictures from locals around town:

Charley on it's way to Orlando.

Here's the scene Mr. B and his dad faced on their way back to the Tampa area, normally an hour and a half drive, on Saturday became a five hour drive home. We picked up his dad on Thursday because Charley was supposed to hit Tampa but by Friday we realized we uprooted Mr. B senior only to put him directly in the path of the storm!

So many wonderful people came to help, the power companies had the biggest job. 700 miles of electrical wire had been destroyed and some transfer stations were completely destroyed and had to be rebuilt. The power guys are big heroes in our town these days, they've been working non-stop since Aug. 14.

Damage around town.

Before

After. House not damaged.

It's been 44 years since a hurricane has hit this close to Orlando so many very large trees got the worst of the storm. Have been listening to the sounds of numerous chain saws for the last week.

Whew, glad that's over! Also glad to be back with my friends at The Guild! :-)

Former NY Times Managing Editor Howell Raines has the funniest op ed in today's WaPo---The "Dumb" Factor".

Unintended funny, that is. I sent this response in a letter to the editor:

Howell Raines' op ed made me laugh out loud, given what it says about the "intellectual curiosity" of Raines and the toffs with whom he associates.

One can only laugh at the thought of their spending all that famously cerebral firepower mulling over "how the coservative brain works". From Reagan to Bush to your everyday gun-owning dad and pro-life mom, the swells seem endlessly baffled that anyone could think like that....must be something wrong with their BRAINS!

They're not biased, you see. How can one be biased just because he doesn't agree with a philosophy directly sprung from a defective brain?

I was very tempted to sign it "Marie Antoinette". When the bread runs out, for goodness sake, why don't the imbeciles just eat cake?!

From the ' Now I have hear it all' files.

A caller just called into the CSpan Nut Hour and said " If the government says that there were no survivors on the planes from 9-11, how do we know that those planes weren't empty".

And just when you thought you heard it all.

I am now convinced that those yellow bracelets are to identify outpatients.

Btw, what is a sitzpinkler?

Yes, sitzpinkler is a real German word, at least according to Britain's Telegraph. It's meaning? "In German, the phrase for someone who sits and urinates, a "Sitzpinkler", is equivalent to "wimp"."

Did you notice the "quick comments" at the bottom of the page?

Almost as funny as the photos.

Democratic presidential nominee U.S. Senator John Kerry (news - web sites) (D-MA) listens as he is introduced at a fundraiser in Los Angeles, California August 26, 2004 that featured a performance by singer Tony Bennett (R).

Tony's looking like his age - 78, and Effin isn't far behind (just well botoxed).

I love the way Effin, Edwards and the rest of the loony left have adopted those Lance Armstrong bracelets as some sort of symbol of how really caring they are. They've been produced by Nike, that evil company that has "outsourced" the manufacture of nearly all its shoes and clothing to *gasp* CHINA! Do Kerry and Edwards not care about all the American clothing workers who lost their jobs?

Hey, what's a little hypocrisy among friends?

I read recently that some German city had ordered men using public restrooms to "sitzpinkle" because they were making too much of a mess with the traditional method. Kerry is the quintessential sitzpinkler.

IG and HLL, be forewarned:

MADISON Square Garden is trying to keep some uninvited delegates from taking over. The site of the Republican National Convention is currently filled with glue traps to deal with an apparent rodent problem. One visitor was caught when she put a can of soda under her chair. Another inadvertently stepped in a trap while on a visit to the arena. "Have you ever tried to get one of these off?" our source asked. Representatives for the Garden had no comment. (Page Six)

Where did they get this bit of nonsense:

IT'S surely a case of wishful thinking on their part, but some Republicans [like I said, WHO?] are spreading the rumor that the GOP's national convention will actually have some excitement when Dick Cheney announces he's stepping down as vice president because of his health. This far-fetched scenario would supposedly lead to a dramatic floor fight orchestrated for the nation's prime-time TV audience and a "Draft McCain" movement to end with John McCain, a bigger war hero than John Kerry [Not if you really look at his record] (and very popular with swing voters), as President Bush's running mate. (PageSix)

Looks like Laura got a new hairdo for the convention. Maybe a little windswept here?

Poifect T! I saw Howell Raines's editoral in the Guardian the other day. I skimmed through the quite lengthy whine and had myself a good chuckle. Lefties are a bunch of crybabies!

New thread coming up....
