I'm running Windows XP . I've been having this problem for about three months now and I'm REALLY fed up... Basically my computer restarts itself... RANDOMLY , sometimes 2-3 times a week . I don't believe it is overheating as it can happen just minutes after I turn the computer on in the morning . My wife checked the computer system a month or so ago and it was clean with no worms/viruses . Does anyone have a clue why my computer automatically re-boots itself ?
Don't worry about it. We have software to choose from and low cost hardware.
Although the new glowing cases sound interesting. Glad to know the mac guys are up to productive uses ;-]
Virus
Update your Virus Scanner, the Virus you have is a fairly current one.
Amen Saint!
Yeah, I know of the problem. You need to go to microsoft.com and get their newest updates. If you get the message that it is going to shutdown, go to RUN and type in "shutdown.exe -a". After your updates you should re-boot and then everything should be ok.
Your beeber stuned mine so badly it knocked me off line as soon as my post went through. I think you might be the problem. Quit stuning my beeber, please ;-0)
Does it give you a warning and a countdown?
If it does you may have Sasser on it.
I've got Win-XP on my fast home machine and all my super-fast business office machines; they run like liquid Jell-O®, downhill = flawlessly.
Suggestion: pull the plug when you shut-down. Do a re-format and re-load on the HD. It ISN'T WIN-XP that's causing your 'puter to act-up.
And the Linux/Mac CRAP aren't the answer; they're worse than festering herpes sores. Tried both O/S (Linux/Mac junk), and they're garbage.
Do yourself a favor: re-format and re-load XP. Make sure Norton SystemWorks 2004 is installed and you use it weekly to WinDoctor, Clean and Optimize the HD.
Make sure all the cards on your motherboard are tight and secured, then cables before suspecting the switch.
Get a repair tool from McAfee or Norton (download for free). Run it. Then buy antivirus from either of the above and subscribe to virus profile update service.
It may be hardware, like a failing power supply or voltage regulator, or as someone else suggested, heat. To eliminate heat as a suspect, run the box with the case open (if you have little ones, try running it with the box open but in a room the little ones can't get into). There are no lethal voltages exposed (that are easily touched) but exploring fingers can damage components.
If it is not heat, then you'll have to take it to a pro somewhere.
Good luck!
Isn't it "shutdown -a"
I'm not familiar with that executable ;)
I once had a similar problem that turned out to be the dogs wagging tail hitting the power button.
Would have NEVER figured it out if it haddent happened right in front of me.
Also, look where your feet are and see if they are near a plug in, (a loose plug a wayward toe = restart)
Either one should work because you don't really have to put in the ".exe" on executables. But the bulletin at microsoft says "shutdown.exe -a".
And while you're looking down, make sure your bubbies arent resting on the keyboard. Could be hitting the power button.
" Do you have up-to-date virus software on your computer "
No .
" and have you run a virus scan lately? "
A month ago , and it was clean . The problem has existed for THREE months . I will do another virus scan today .
" Check the cooling fan on your processor "
Will do .
"The real problem? Overheated! All the upgrading of hardware had outgrown the fan "
I haven't added any new hardware since buying the computer 2 and a half years ago . Perhaps there is a problem with the cooling fan , though .
" Desktop or laptop? "
Deasktop
" How old? "
2 and a half years
" If a desktop, is there a chance your RAM has become unseated? "
Possible I guess .
We'll do a virus scan first and go from there . Thanks for all your help and advice freepers .
That's what happened to me. Had to replace motherboard.
" Does it give you a warning and a countdown?
If it does you may have Sasser on it. "
No warning or countdown ...just REBOOT !
We used to have this problem until we conquered static electricity.
You guys are wonderful helping Sushi out....
Make me glad I only have an Etch-A-Sketch...with all the problems he is having.
