Yikes! My computer keeps restarting itself! ( Windows XP HELP )

Posted on 08/17/2004 4:00:25 PM PDT by sushiman

I'm running Windows XP . I've been having this problem for about three months now and I'm REALLY fed up... Basically my computer restarts itself... RANDOMLY , sometimes 2-3 times a week . I don't believe it is overheating as it can happen just minutes after I turn the computer on in the morning . My wife checked the computer system a month or so ago and it was clean with no worms/viruses . Does anyone have a clue why my computer automatically re-boots itself ?

My money is on a virus. Checking for a virus a month or so ago is not adequate. You should check at least once a week (or heck once a day). Your anti-virus software must be up to date for all of this stuff to work.

Mine started to do that awhile back, then the restarting increased in frequency. Turned out that the mother board had gone bad and needed to be replaced.

I'd say George W. Bush...was probably in your PC causing unilateral havoc.

I'd call John Kerry...and see if he would be more sensitive to your needs.

FWIW-

Update your antivirus software, then reboot into safe mode. Run the antivirus in safe mode with no network connections.

It's probably the Sasser virus - if you get a box that pops up that mentions the NT System Authority and lssas.exe, it is Sasser. You will need to install the proper security updates and update your virus definition files to correct the problem.

Possibly the fans on the power supply has gone out. It used to happen to me. What happens is that, you computer gets hot and the power supply cuts out, to keep the computer from frying. The only thing that you can do, is replace the power supply.

This happened to me with another version of windows, I think Windows ME. Try starting in safe mode and choosing a restore point as far back as you can. That's all I can think of.

Now if someone can tell me why my husband's Gateway, running XP, is suddenly refusing to load web pages even though I've scanned for viruses, adware, spyware, defragged, and dumped temporary files, please share! I'm about ready to chuck it out the window.

Being a Mac user, I'm afraid I can't help you - but what is this 'restart' thing I keep hearing about from Windows users? My computer has never come unstarted.

Have you caught it in the act?

What does the system log show? (normal shutdown or just a boot and disk cleanup) Use EventViewer in 'administrative tools' to see the log (or use the event viewer part of computer management). You'll need to know when the last reset happened. Not a normal shutdown reboot cycle in the log. It shows things (services etc) shutting down etc. Then some time later shows things starting.

If the reboots show the system shutting down it means some software (a virus?) has called the system shutdown APIs. If the log just shows the system booting without a prior shutdown you most likely have a hardware problem (although it may be possible to cause the symptom with software).

It would be much easyier to see if you catch it on the unexpected login. Log in then immediatly start event viewer.
You will see a batch of logs about things starting. Before that there will eather be shutdown logs or not. If not hardware, if then software.

it appears that you may have a hidden worm...scan, and clean up the files, i'm sure it will help!

It could be a cat bonking into your monitor cable or other cable just enough to trigger a restart, or just a faulty on-off-restart main switch.

I had the same problem last summer. I took the puter to a tech and he said it was getting hot due to dust getting sucked into the vents. Now I blow it all out every couple of months and haven't had a problem since.
