After coming upon spastic, squealing pigs on fire, a Nevada Highway Patrol trooper drew his gun early Tuesday and put them out of their misery, a Highway Patrol spokesman said.
The trooper shot about eight pigs that were on fire or severely burned after the truck they were traveling in burst into flames for unknown reasons, Trooper Loy Hixson said.
"Since they sustained substantial injuries, we put them down for humane reasons," Hixson said.
A truck filled with about 180 pigs headed south on Interstate 15 from St. George, Utah, to a slaughterhouse in Los Angeles burst into flames for unknown reasons about 4:45 a.m. near the Apex area north of Las Vegas.
The driver pulled the truck over, and jumped out to investigate the cause of smoke coming from the rear of his vehicle.
He ran back to the cab of the truck to get a fire extinguisher, but the front part of the trailer was engulfed in flames by the time he returned, Hixson said.
A total of about 50 pigs died as a result of the fire, and the truck was destroyed, Hixson said.
That can't be right, iron pigs don't burn.
