The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Hehehe... I know! I'm glad most of the time I'll be doing Windows, and they gave me a very nice XP box to use.

Remember, this is a CS department at a university. Half of 'em are socialists from being around Higher Education too long; the rest are either keeping their heads down, like me, in the hopes of graduating and getting a high-paying job in the real world; or they know they'll never get the job they really want. Which would be Bill Gates'.

I think a lot of Windows-hatred is really just Gates-envy.

"then slice it and pretend it's pizza"

LOL! I hope it works :) Hmm--wonder if there's a way to make low-carb pizza bread. . .

Heh, the Green Bay news is interviewing veterans about the Swift Boat Veterans ads, and they made the Kerry campaign look pretty bad. They asked a Kerry campaign representative to respond and he got really defensive and tried to change the subject, which they showed. Then the narrator says, "Eventually, we *finally* got him to answer the question. . ."

Hey, 2J, what kind of ice cream is it that you always get? I can't get my favorite brand of Splenda ice cream out here :-( and I've disliked some of the others I've tried... and you know, the one problem with Atkins is the lack of comfort food.

I think a lot of Windows-hatred is really just Gates-envy.

Some of it probably is; but I've also known a lot of CS people who have been irritated with Microsoft's product quality and customer service ever since the OS/2 controversy in the early/mid-90s (if I recall right).

I've only been here about six months, so I'm probably one of the next-newbiest :) Welcome to the Hole!

I have a new idea bouncing around in my brain (there's plenty of unused room there), and I thought I'd fly it past you folks.

How many of you would like a FREE Hobbit Hole knife to carry around, on the chance that you meet someone worthy to give it to? 2J and Hair have done that already. If you see a GI on the street, or meet a veteran, you have an "instant gift", and you don't have to give away your own knife. Give one away, and I'll send you another replacement. All I ask in return is you provide me with the details of whom you gave it to.

It won't cost any more than what we're doing already, and I'd have more "agents" out ther trying to drum up business. These knives would be the serrated ones, because we wouldn't be shipping them through the US mail overseas.

Once the knives come in, I'll keep one, in the box, in my briefcase, "just in case". If you're doing campaign work, you may come across some veteran along the way. Get the word, and a knife, out to him.

Does anybody see any merit to this plan?

Going on... oh... our three-year anniversary will be next January, I think. New people come in and join us all the time, though.

I'm sure that's quite true. Funny, because Gates was the quintessential dork-made-good. He was *them* oh-so-many years ago, and now they hate him because he has a 36-car garage. Big f'n deal.

If the geek peeps really want somebody to hate, they should have picked Larry Ellison over at Oracle. Now *there* lies a buttmunch of biblical proportions. That guy is just crying for a disgruntled employee to head to the roof with a rifle. He has even managed to piss off the Redwood City council with his arrogance with regard to his tendency to run his G-5 jet into and out of the redwood city airport at all hours of the night.

Sounds like a good idea, though in my case I'd have to think about who I might give it to first. Hmmm--have you thought about hooking up with any veterans' groups online or something like that?

Hi Narvinye!

Welcome to the Hobbit Hole. ecurbh should add you to his Tolkien ping list... he'll use that whenever there is LoTR related news, like when the RoTK extended edition comes out this fall.

Other than that, you'll see that we just come here, no frequent pinging, and we talk about pretty much everything going on with us, seems hardly never about LoTR anymore, there just isn't much new news there of late! We're just very good friends.

Anyway, just jump right in, introduce yourself if you wish, jump in on any topic, we're friendly folk.

That's a really interesting idea. Come to think of it... I've run across a few Iraq/Afghan vets in the last some months, and I suppose I'll be meeting more in the future, as more people are rotated through.

I'm liking the idea.

Is there any good associated with Oracle?

Sigh... wish geeks would be a little less childish sometimes. At least the ones I work with are ok. I like working with geeks, I just don't like working with their little attitudes.

I think it's a great idea. Not for me personally, my circles don't seem to intersect vets/GIs for some reason. But there are enough people here who tell stories like 2J's airport story, that it seems like a good idea.

Well, I signed up on 9/11, but had been lurking for several months before that.

Oh, and I added you to my Tolkien "Ring-ping" list, which has been becoming far less active since Return of the King was released.

No. There is no good associated with Oracle. The last thing you *ever* want to do is to try to negotiate a license with those insufferable B@stards. Once they have you, they own you, and they will wring you like a sweaty towel for everything you have. Not that I'm prejudiced here or anything...

I was really put off by Oracle a few years ago when I had to write the code to move our accounting data into the Oracle db that our new parent company used. Here it was... the late nineties... and I had to form the data into what was basically an oldschool IBM punchcard 82-character format... complete with *overpunch* characters for negative numbers...

Overpunch characters? Yeesh... nobody, but nobody uses that sort of thing anymore to do SQL code into or out of db's anymore. Except Oracle... whah friggin' hooh... here we were, taking a bold step into the 1970's.
