The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Bad girl! ;-)

Just about lunchtime here...should be able to get in a chapter or two of To Say Nothing of the Dog.

I'm trying to remember who Carruthers was in the other book. My memory is terrible.

Not bad, there's just nothing important going on.

Carruthers wasn't in the other book. The only crossover characters are Mr. Dunworthy and Finch (sounds like a detecting team or something, don't they?).

I love the first chapter. "Sleep, that knits the ravelled sleeve of a non-AFS-uniform..."

OK...for some reason his name was familiar, but I couldn't place him.

I remembered Dunworthy and Finch, of course!

Yeah, so far it's pretty good.

It's comedy. It won't make you cry like "Doomsday Book", but it ought to make you laugh. And, probably, come away feeling like you've got to read a dozen books that get made reference to... that's how I discovered Dorothy Sayers, I was looking up a reference from To Say Nothing.

Just a brief stop : on writing villains. May hve to go pick up a couple of Batman comics to get the gist, but am now having some thoughts on my villain...

At least two of the knives are already spoken for. The other five will find homes, soon enough.

Hair, I'd rather avoid mailing knives back and forth, if I can. We're just donating more money to the post office.

We're getting the "seconds" for $5 each, because otherwise the dealer can't get rid of them for any amount. If you want one, priority mail will be another $5 (actually, $4.35, but I have to recover some fuel costs, and this keeps it in whole numbers). That $5 postage will cover shipping more than one knife in the package.

On a related note, Brent from Bladematrix stopped by the site, and noticed all the references to Highest Honor. I guess it's time we update things. I asked him for some photos from his company, to replace the ones we have up now. I also suggested he contact ecurbh if he'd like some sort of commercial presence on the site.

Finally, can we set up a page for some of the choicer comments that the troops have made? Either stuff from the site, or from emails I get. They're really quite inspiring, and should make everyone proud of the work we're doing.

As this war on terror continues, more of the "comfort items" will become available to the troops as "standard equipment". But as one Marine colonel said in an email, "gifts that you can use in the field are a real gem".

I think we can put together an impressive array of quotes for the site.

Have you read Sayers' book "The Mind of the Maker"? I would have gotten it the other day, but it was a choice between that and the Idiots Guide to Writing Comics...and I really needed the latter.

I loved her explanation of the Holy Trinity.

All right, I want one. I'll send you a check right away - maybe this afternoon - and include the extra I meant to send some time ago.

No, just her mysteries. I love Lord Peter but absolutely despise Harriet. In my opinion, Harriet is the worst Mary-Sue I've ever seen in genuine literature.

Here's an interesting site, my friend...

http://www.adoptasniper.org/sniperletters.html

Read these letters...they got all kinds of stuff they mention they want that I have no idea what it is and immediately thought that you would find it informative?

I wrote the soldier from the airport...Ashley...asked if she got the knife. I'll let you know when or if I hear from her.

"Oh, I almost forgot... the gentle version comes with a hug. ((FEDORA))"

LOL! Well in that case I'll take the gentle version, LOL! Seriously, no problem; I appreciated hearing your thoughts. Gives me some things to learn more about!

Sounds interesting! Hmmm, the idea of me as a villain is kinda scary, LOL! Seriesly, I think sometimes I use myself as the villain and sometimes I use other people as the villain. Same with heroes. One time I wrote a chart labelling different parts of my personality so I could create characters out of them.

I have a weird earworm today (actually I have two competing earworms, but this is one of them). I have the Japanese version of the "Teen Titans" theme in my head, but since it's Japanese the words don't make sense, so I find my subconscious is filling in the blanks by supplying words from other, English songs that sound similar to the Japanese words in the song. So right now I have a blend of the "Teen Titans" theme and the theme from one of the lines in "The Bugs Bunny/Roadrunner Show". It's a vey strange song--catchy, though. . .

I knew someone who told me they didnt like her mysteries because she thought Sayers was racist. Ive never read them so I could dispute/agree with her...would you say that??

What chart did you use? I might need something like that...its the same problem I am having with my other story line. I have a basic idea of how I want to him to be (Bill Clinton is the best one I have thought of as a model, but Im not sure I want him that likeable...but then he might have to be...something to think about...) but havent been willing to 'get inside his head.'

Ive been slowly going over your notes. Thank you for taking the time to look at the script!!!

They LOVED it...have watched it 3 times already.

Got Forbidden Planet too and it was a thumbs down, though...too much kissin' going on!
