The Hobbit Hole XIV - Hill and Water Under Sky

Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!

...Hill and water under sky

New verse:

Upon the hearth the fire is red,
Beneath the roof there is a bed;
But not yet weary are our feet,
Still round the corner we may meet
A sudden tree or standing stone
That none have seen but we alone.
Tree and flower and leaf and grass,
Let them pass! Let them pass!
Hill and water under sky,
Pass them by! Pass them by!

Still round the corner there may wait
A new road or a secret gate,
And though we pass them by today,
Tomorrow we may come this way
And take the hidden paths that run
Towards the Moon or to the Sun.
Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe,
Let them go! Let them go!
Sand and stone and pool and dell,
Fare you well! Fare you well!

Home is behind, the world ahead,
And there are many paths to tread
Through shadows to the edge of night,
Until the stars are all alight.
Then world behind and home ahead,
We’ll wander back to home and bed.
Mist and twilight, cloud and shade,
Away shall fade! Away shall fade!
Fire and lamp, and meat and bread,
And then to bed! And then to bed!

Woo-hoo!

I found a second library listed on that page that's closer to my place, so I checked it out. GREAT SF section! They had basically everything except for the Jerry Pournelle "Falkenberg's Legions" books I wanted. Oh well. Got some other stuff, good stuff and who-knows stuff. Found a "Flix and Pip" novel I haven't read, the new Harry Turtledove book, and a couple other things.

I love libraries... happy sigh...

Seriously...what's she like, this Princess of yours?

She's not really a princess... that's just how I think of her. She's someone important, like a general's daughter, who The Hero has to protect after they get seperated from the mercenary group. She's intelligent but a little naive, which is why she has to be protected, and she's not obnoxious.

Really quiet in Orlando right now... Not a car on the street. Check out that freeway.

Hi everyone!

Not a single drop of rain here, believe it or not. Just some fairly strong gusts now and again.

I'm praying hard for those folks in this hurricane's path though. Charley is a BEAST of a storm and will leave plenty of damage behind, no doubt.

I'm hoping that by the time Charley reaches ksen, it'll have fizzled out to nothing more than a severe thunderstorm, however, I'm not too sure considering at was a Cat 4 when it made landfall.

I'm gonna vegetate for a while here. Rented some movies and bought some snacks. :-)

Well I didn't want chowdah without potatoes so it's veggie night. Thinking about popping corn and watching Red Zone Cuba.

Ok. Concert report.

Performers: Bob Dylan, Willie Nelson
Openers: The Hot Club Of Cowtown (catchy swing/jazz/country trio)
Venue: Ripkin Stadium, Aberdeen, MD

Weather Forecast: 1" of rain. Severe storms, flooding.

It started out great- being people watchers we were intrigued by all the no-so-local color that was pouring into town. We have a season ticket package for the local minor league team so we know "local" and these folks were "city."

It's been ages since I've been to a big-name concert. The last was John Denver (in Denver) back in the early 90's. That was great. I was really into the show so I don't remember many of the details about the people. But last night we decided there is definately a semi-professional concert-goer set. You can spot them by the brand new concert shirts and hats they wear... from all sorts of other bands.

We saw some stoned folks, some who smelled strange. More than a few young-Dylan look-alikes. And a bunch of ancient Willie Nelson look-alikes. (Am I using enough dashes for y'all?) But overall all they were all better groomed than we were expecting. A few straight-laced suburbanites who came straight after work were still in business attire. There were a ton of young people. It was soooo interesting.

Well, we knew the forcast was for rain so we came prepared with rain coats. The ballpark was prepared for rain. The infield tarp was spread out to protect the diamond for the Little League World Series coming up. But for some reason, the sound crew wasn't prepared for rain.

And boy did it rain! We got 5 minutes into the opening act when these *angry*, BIG raindrops came slapping down. It was quite a storm- wind, torrential rain. It was cold. Very intense. We toughed it out for a while, but finally went up to the concourse. It was pointless, we were soaked through. It took about 30 minutes for the (first) storm to pass.

Well, finally it cleared up and they started gearing up to bring Willie on.

It wasn't pretty.

Some genius (knowing the forecast for rain) put all the sound equipment in a canvas party tent down on the outfield. It got soaked, too. With no time to do a real sound check, Willie came out with his band- featuring a couple of his children. They were good. Then the speakers went out, the mikes went dead.... all except for Willie's.

Willie Nelson is a good performer, a colorful personality.... but he can't sing unaccompanied. And that's all we got. Willie on a mike. No music. It was really, really, really bad. I felt terrible for him. But to their credit, they played on.

He sang some classics, a few new songs. Some rock, some country, some blues, some gospel. He had fun with some lyrics ("Mommas, Don't let your cowboys grow up to be babies...."), forgot a bunch of them. Toward the end, they managed to jury-rig some speakers and we finally had sound. (He sounds much better with his band!) To his credit, he opened with the unfurling of the American flag and didn't make any stupid leftist statements. It was great. I got to see *Willie Nelson*

Then it started raining again.

It was still raining when Bob Dylan came on. I had no idea the lengths he's gone through to get his life straightened out. It's great. But he'll never really change his 'brain-fried hippy" image. It's sort of like what Rush Limbaugh said years after he lost all that weight. "It doesn't matter how much weight I lose, the public will always think of me as a fat man." It's not nice, but it is true.

So Bob looked good in a post- "brain-fried hippy" kind of way. He's still unintelligible, but in a cool way. He sang (sic) some tunes- mostly from his recent body of work. I didn't recognize any of them but I'm not a big enough fan to really follow him like that. One of his recent pieces I really like is called Dignity but he didn't play it. :(

All in all, he's one of those legends that I'm proud to say I've seen. But I do agree with others who say, "Dylan songs are best when other bands play them!" He's one heck of a lyricist, but.... well, let's just leave it at that.

It kept on raining and it was still cold. About 20 minutes into his set, two idjits got drunk enough to convince each other to run out onto the infield tarp (which was pooling up with water) and run the bases. They were really drunk and trying not to spill the beers they were carrying. Anyhoo, security doesn't think it's funny and two buff young official-looking guys run out and arrest them. The smarter of the two idjits realizes the gig is up and lets himself be cuffed and led away. The other however tries to make a break for it. The security dude tackles him from behind.... running start....tarp full of water....SLIP-N-SLIDE! Idjit slid face first into the pitcher's mound. Thud. Splash. Cheers. Then he puked. And kept on puking for the whole trip up to the concourse. Eeeewie. City people. (Big'ol kept yelling, "Way to go, MORON!!") (He insisted I include that tidbit.)

It was still raining. Hard. And Bob was still singing. We retreated to the concourse again, but it was pointless again. It was cold. We were making puddles/rivers with the water dripping out of us. So we went home. 3+ hours of good music.

Pretty good show.

I'd like to see it again... on a warm, clear summer evening.

This were busy this week and I actually forgot about the pickles!

Well, I sampled one jar. It has that real lacto-fermented kick! I don't think I care for the recipe, tho. It was really salty. I don't hold much hope for the other jars. Things like dill, garlic, and spices are varied but they all used the same brine.

Fortunately I brought in another 3 qts worth of cukes today so I can continue the experiment.

:)

Yeah, where's the Olympic music. Whatever the John William's piece is... and Fanfare to the Common Man.

Ick. Katie Colonic.

Oh well. Better her than Jim Nance.
