New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, |
Still round the corner there may wait |
Home is behind, the world ahead, |
Got it. Got Adaware. It worked like a charm.
Steve is in the shower, fixin' to go to bed (he's been up since 3am...had to collect samples in the night.)
I'll check back in in a bit.
Thought I'd whistle a bit but Miss Cat has trapped my whistles.
Everybody's a critic.
Good evening! Back from my walk. Had a nice one, then got in the car and popped over to B&N. Nice...
Actually, the machines we let the Comp Sci 101 types use are locked down so hard, it's not funny. They can't do too much bad because we don't let 'em do anything. And the machines have nothing but Office on, really, so the worst-case scenario is scorch the machine and reinstall.
Yeah, but Ghost makes that even easier: you get the machine configured like you want it, then use Ghost to create an image of the hard drive. Once you have the image you can load it to any similar system. It lets you stamp out identically configured systems in just a couple of minutes... it even has a broadcast feature so you can load as many systems as you want with the same image over the network, all in parallel. Very cool and very fast.
I'm not sure yet what we're using but I don't think we do Ghost.
Oh man, I've upgraded dozens of computers but today I was scared I was going to do something wrong. "What if the files I backed up for her didn't really get backed up? What if I toast her pc? Will they kick me out of school, or just make me TA Database Management Systems?"
hehehe... not hardly... that's a very good Dad thing ta do. Teaches da yung'uns about why payin' the fuel bill is a good thing to do. :-) They need to 'preciate why it is that living under your roof is something to value... :-)
Good evening everybody! :-) [sip]
I'm. Getting. Damn. Tired. of. the. U. f'n. K. office. I have never in my life seen a bigger group of whiners in my whole life! And this is coming from somebody (me) that's up to his eyeballs in berkeley-PhD's that can't figure out how to get on the Internet from their everlovin' favorite Starbucks store.
I swear... if Birkenstock made a computer it would have to have only ONE key on the keyboard or everybody would get confused and whine about how "complicated" it is.
Yes... I've had it up to ---><--- here yet again.
[sigh] Evenin' evellybody. :-) [sip]
Howdy Ruthmeister! :-)
roger that. Ghost rocks.
Evening g'nad - tractor/brush hog fixed?
Woo-hoo, the berkeley-Birkenstock-PhD types I get to hang around for the next hundred years know how to use computers.
It'll be undergrad students who are my bane. And they're vermin... mwahahaha....
I got the administrator password (but not root) to our whole system today....
death tuh Birkenstocks...
*gulp*...
Evening Ramius; Does it make you wonder how they lost a perfectly good Empire?
Birkenstock Laptop, hmmm. you're on to something there.
hehehehe... Welcome to hell... please check your coat in the closet on right as you enter.
There's no purity of basic essence quite like the sense of loss of someone else's data, when you realize that the backup didn't work. Embrace it. :-) (oh... and when you deliver the news... bring donuts. It helps.)
Heh... keep at it, and eventually you'll get to the point that when some user whines about losing their data, you'll just shrug your shoulders and say, "Too bad, you should have had that all saved to your network drive!"
Do I sound burned out?
about... finally got the recalcitrant bolt removed... took a blow torch and a five lbs mallet...
decided tuh order a stump jumper... Slash only had the bar tuh mount the blades ontuh... stump jumper is an upgrade... should be here tuhmorrow or the next...
funny story... yesterday, I was tryin' tuh get a hold of my friend, Walt, the county game warden cuz I'm teachin' hunter safety to the homeschool group this fall... left a message... later that afternoon, a truck pulls in with a star on the side... nobody comes back here by accident, our driveway is 3/4 mile through the woods... so I step out on the deck with the .12ga, thinkin' it wuz Walt... it wuzn't... the deputy sheriff put her hands in the air and waved frantically... I quickly set the gun down and told her the situation... she knows Walt, and started laughin'... got a call from Walt last nite... he said "so... I hear you want to shoot me"...
Yes, but not a good thing to do in your first week at work. And I'd have been responsible for the data loss if I'd screwed up. Not a good thing at all.
I'm thinking of seeing if I can skip work Friday. I'm only supposed to do 20 hours this week and I'll be pushing it by the end of the day tomorrow...
Well, yeah, you have a point there.
I'm thinking of seeing if I can skip work Friday.
Hey, wait, first week of work and you already want a day off?!?
I'm just kidding!
Well, if they're only paying me for twenty hours, I'm not working 24!
Besides, I think one of the guys - my superior/predecessor/guy whose job I'll have next year (there ought to be a word for that in English) - won't be there Friday anyway. I'm not sure how much good going in would do.
