In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".
cajole \kuh-JOAL\ verb
1. to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance; coax *
2. to deceive with soothing words or false promises
Example sentence:
Peter's friends cajoled him into coming to the party even though he was not in the mood to go.
Etymology: Did you know?
You might not think to associate "cajole" with "cage," but it's likely that these two words are connected. Researchers have made an association between the prattle of a caged bird and the persistent wheedling of a person attempting to get something out of someone else. "Cajole" comes from a French verb, "cajoler," which now means "coax" but at one time meant "to chatter like a jay." Some etymologists theorize that "cajoler" is from "gaiole," an Old North French word meaning "birdcage" and ancestor to our word "jail." "Gaiole" derives from a Late Latin word, "caveola," which means "little cage" and is the diminutive of the Latin "cavea" ("cage" or "cavity"). Our word "cage" derives from this noun, and "cave" is a close relative.
Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.
The Review threads are linked for your edification. ;-)
Practice makes perfect.....post on....
Rick James-no, I hadn't heard that-when did it happen?
It was the funniest thing............she was so proud of that when one of the coaches called her that in front of everyone yesterday!!!!!!!!!
It was in reference to her propensity for finding all the mud holes on Tuesday and Wednesday!
It was a rough week for me because of the weather, but if she wants to do it again next year I won't hesitate.........the gentleman who runs it is a marvel, he's the soccer coach at one of the High Schools. This was the 18th year he has held the camp - and all of his coaching team for the camp are young men that started out playing soccer at one of these camps......including one that started at age 10 and won an athletic scholarship for college for soccer and another one that now plays professional soccer.
These kids are amazing with the little ones........I was truly impressed with their dedication to their sport and sportsmanship in general....which is something that is heavily stressed.
Is he wearing his *My people went to Williamsburg and all I got was this lousy bandana* outfit?
Does your local YMCA have soccer leagues up there? They start at the 4 year old level here(which is 2 years too early). It is huge here.
SG, loved your comment on the abortion thread - a very good idea for a home based business!
At the end of the "award ceremony" this morning, Coach reminded everyone of the YMCA soccer that starts in the fall...I plan on looking into it, if she remains interested.......
He also runs an indoor soccer program in the late winter/early spring, but that doesn't start until age 7..
The biggest problem for me with most of these things is distance......there is absolutely nothing up at the northern end of the county where I live, everything is south or even in the next county south. To find anything up in this area I have to go to Maryland...........but several of the moms I met at both the swim lessons and at soccer camp (many were the same) said the Y in Maryland has good programs and they suggested several other things up there that to have her do here I would be driving 40+ miles.
The funny thing is that they were all jealous that I can get to WalMart in 15 minutes - when most of them have the 30-40 mile drive...........I'd gladly trade.
So, when are we going to see a screen name change?????
"TexasgirlbackfromPA"
Are you right on the border?
I'm 8 miles from it. Even our dentist and eye doctor are in Maryland........
no, the Peanut Shoppe in the colonial part had dog treats, kanine trail mix and peanut flavored dog biscuits. He has enjoyed a few of those : )
thanks, whyisa, it is good to be home, and not jetlagged! i love vacationing 2 hours from home. it is so much easier than a cross country drive or flight!
Everyone keeps asking me that but I don't think I'm going to change my name....... it's "me"........lol
I was considering going to visit my mother next week but don't relish an 8 hour drive, then another one for 9 hours a week later to take my daughter to school......... man I had forgotten what a huge State Texas is...........
i don't blame you, whyisa, it IS You, and it would be hard to get used to you looking "different", even if it was something short and pithy and easier to type!
Yes I know everyone wants me to get a shorter name......lol.......
LOL!!!
Good for you!!!
I haven't been around much this summer Gabz - how is your summer going? Did you get your garden planted?
You have had very good reason to have not been around this summer..............I trust settling in has been going well for you.....
My summer has been going well and I did get much of my garden in - not as much as I wanted, but that is because of the weather.
We have had an unbelieveable amount of rain (20+ inches in 10 days and that was prior to the amount we got yesterday) and so I am not sure if I'm going to be able to salvage a lot of my plants.......much of the garden is currently under water.
I'm looking forward to next week - Jax is going to Bible camp/school and I will actually have 4 hours every morning to use as I see fit..........unlike this week with soccer camp or the 2 weeks with swim lessons, this time I don't have to be there.
Can't wait to hear all the details of how things are going with you.
Well, you could change your name to Whyza.
I just checked, it's available. That way, you could change it, and keep it!
Just thought I'd stop by-hubby is snoring and tossing so that I can't sleep so I decided to work on some estimates and see what was going on here...
