Word For The Day, Monday, August 2, 2004
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 08/02/2004 | The Reluctant Substitute

Posted on 08/02/2004 8:52:03 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cajole \kuh-JOAL\ verb
1. to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance; coax *
2. to deceive with soothing words or false promises

Example sentence:
Peter's friends cajoled him into coming to the party even though he was not in the mood to go.

Etymology: Did you know?
You might not think to associate "cajole" with "cage," but it's likely that these two words are connected. Researchers have made an association between the prattle of a caged bird and the persistent wheedling of a person attempting to get something out of someone else. "Cajole" comes from a French verb, "cajoler," which now means "coax" but at one time meant "to chatter like a jay." Some etymologists theorize that "cajoler" is from "gaiole," an Old North French word meaning "birdcage" and ancestor to our word "jail." "Gaiole" derives from a Late Latin word, "caveola," which means "little cage" and is the diminutive of the Latin "cavea" ("cage" or "cavity"). Our word "cage" derives from this noun, and "cave" is a close relative.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Today is the last day of the camp.............they are going to have some competitions and then there is an "award ceremony" and they all get T-shirts.......

At least the weather is decent - the sun is shining and it's only 63 right now.

See you later.

the W'burg area appears to me to be Bush Cheney territory. and last night when i was getting out of the car, the kid staying in the next unit, who must have been around 13 or so, said to me "i like your bumper sticker", i said thanks, we like it too. i asked if he had been to the Stars and Stripes store yet, and he said they had and they bought the GOP=Gods Official Party bumper sticker there. i was very gratified by the entire exchange. the kid waited around for me, bc xsgirls had jumped out and run in but xsboy was screwing around with the videogame in the car and didn't want me to turn th car off, bc it is powered by the car battery and he needed to SAVE something. so basically i was threatening to swat xsboy over that whole thing when this kid was hanging around to talk bumperstickers with me.

It needs to be 200K or so to indicate rapid expansion of the economy.

However the household survey indicates that Total employment rose by 629,000, meaning a crapload of people got existing jobs, that did not previously have one.

With unemployment at 5.5 % (5% being full employment) this is going to be a PITA issue thru Novemeber.
