Word For The Day, Monday, August 2, 2004
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 08/02/2004 | The Reluctant Substitute

Posted on 08/02/2004 8:52:03 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cajole \kuh-JOAL\ verb
1. to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance; coax *
2. to deceive with soothing words or false promises

Example sentence:
Peter's friends cajoled him into coming to the party even though he was not in the mood to go.

Etymology: Did you know?
You might not think to associate "cajole" with "cage," but it's likely that these two words are connected. Researchers have made an association between the prattle of a caged bird and the persistent wheedling of a person attempting to get something out of someone else. "Cajole" comes from a French verb, "cajoler," which now means "coax" but at one time meant "to chatter like a jay." Some etymologists theorize that "cajoler" is from "gaiole," an Old North French word meaning "birdcage" and ancestor to our word "jail." "Gaiole" derives from a Late Latin word, "caveola," which means "little cage" and is the diminutive of the Latin "cavea" ("cage" or "cavity"). Our word "cage" derives from this noun, and "cave" is a close relative.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Boy, that's a nasty name to google, isn't it? I'm glad the kiddos weren't in the room just now. Ugh.

Has anyone been paying attention to the swift boat ad? Apparently it has Camp Kedwards knickers in a twist. This is getting good. ;)

Oh good. Another sign to put in my back window! Or where my kerry contributor neighbors will have to see it. I saw how much they gave at opensecrets.org and highly recommend that site.

It is 96 here and sunny-the temperature is predicted to drop some tomorrow-I hope so- it really hasn't been a terribly hot summer in a couple of years, and it is appreciably cooler up here at a higher altitude and away from buildings, parking lots and streets.

I really don't see the allure in body piercings, except for ears. Out here, the only women who have pierced navels are the obviously trashy ones who look like they put their makeup on with a putty knife and also have bra straps hanging out of their tank top, or their panties (thong or otherwise) showing above their hip huggers.

This is the first time she has been involved in anything like this - and just like I did with the swim lessons - I stay.

It's actually been enjoyable talking with the other moms who stay, because they've filled me in on the various other things available for the young ones in this area.......and many of them are homeschoolers.

We had the very first corn out of our garden last night!!!!

I had always heard the very best way to truly understand sweet corn was to pick it, shuck it, and get it into the pot within minutes..........they are right!!!!!!!!

My condolences to your upon the loss of your good friend.

My garden is a muddy field - I'm afraid about the only thing that will be salvageable is going to be the corn.

I am SICK and TIRED of rain - I truly mean it............

My 20 mile trip home this afternoon after soccer camp and filling out the paperwork for Bible Camp/School next week took me danged near an hour........I was not a happy camper by the time I got home this afternoon.

At least next week I only have to drive 10 miles and drop her off to the friend who is the arts and crafts teacher and he will take her along with 6 others the rest of the way to the Church.......and most mornings I won't even have to do that - because of the time he is picking the kids up, hubby can do it most mornings!!! Yippee! I may actually be able to get something accomplished around here next week.

A friend of mine has the pierced belly button and the lower back tattoo - along with tatoos on her ankles - and she is no kid, she's 40.

OTOH - she and her husband are also great parents - they are self-employed, yet the kids are involved in all kinds of things and will be attending Bible Camp/School with mine next week.

I learned long ago not to judge a book by it's cover.

Glad your schedule just got easier-there's a lot to be said for that. Fresh corn is the best-I haven't got a big enough deer-proof spot to do corn this year, but I'm intending to fence in an additional garden bed in front of the house after it gets cool that will be large enough for corn.

The pierced women I'm referring to are way younger than 40, and I don't thing any of them have tatoos (or husbands and kids). They are mostly grown young women who live at home with equally trashy parents and pick up men in pool halls and taverns. A couple of them are unabashed professional prostitutes, and don't care who knows it.

This is the very first time we have ever tried planting corn. And amazingly - it worked!!!

I'm going to have a lot to put in the freezer for later consumption - hubby planted 5 rows - 40feet each!!!!!

Because of the creek between us and the woods we don't have a problem with the deer.....knock on wood!

This particular friend of mine is anything BUT trashy - she just decided that since she has wanted a tattoo for years she was going to get it...then decided on another - and is now talking about another!!!

the one on her ankle is the only one that is ever visible - even in a bathing suit the one on her back is not visible - but she is thinking about one on her shoulder.

I'm terrified of needles - so the idea of a tatoo is totally without interest for me!!!!
