Word For The Day, Monday, August 2, 2004
Merriam-Webster Online Dictionary | 08/02/2004 | The Reluctant Substitute

Posted on 08/02/2004 8:52:03 AM PDT by VRWCmember

In order that we might all raise the level of discourse and expand our language abilities, here is the daily post of "Word for the Day".

cajole \kuh-JOAL\ verb
1. to persuade with flattery or gentle urging especially in the face of reluctance; coax *
2. to deceive with soothing words or false promises

Example sentence:
Peter's friends cajoled him into coming to the party even though he was not in the mood to go.

Etymology: Did you know?
You might not think to associate "cajole" with "cage," but it's likely that these two words are connected. Researchers have made an association between the prattle of a caged bird and the persistent wheedling of a person attempting to get something out of someone else. "Cajole" comes from a French verb, "cajoler," which now means "coax" but at one time meant "to chatter like a jay." Some etymologists theorize that "cajoler" is from "gaiole," an Old North French word meaning "birdcage" and ancestor to our word "jail." "Gaiole" derives from a Late Latin word, "caveola," which means "little cage" and is the diminutive of the Latin "cavea" ("cage" or "cavity"). Our word "cage" derives from this noun, and "cave" is a close relative.

Rules: Everyone must leave a post using the Word for the Day in a sentence.
The sentence must, in some way, relate to the news of the day.

Sounds like no company would be better than that company, Tex.

Thanks. After a hectic five days in which she got worse, she is finally on the mend for good. Doc sees her again on Friday and will hopefully let her go back to work. Meantime we have had some much needed quality mother/daughter time. She went to the funeral with me, then we both went for haircuts together.

Tough breaks ..

Yes, spider bites can be very nasty (locally) while they heal.

It would seem that such a small insect couldn't do much harm, and the bites are very, very seldom fatal, but they are very damaging in that region around the wound.

The initial infection was about 5" by 7", by the next day it had tripled in size, then that was doubled on the fourth day. I would say it was nasty allright. The bite itself was nothing, the infection was pretty awful.

No, nothing that healthy! Although everyone here likes it, I was talking about the junk food white cheese puff things that don't turn your fingers orange.
Marinated shrimp on skewers here tonight. It's almost like being at your house. ;)

Great minds think alike-I don't have to cook the shrimp, though-I've already sliced all the veggies, the greens are in ice water, so I've just got to open a can of ripe olives, arrange all the stuff on the plates, grate some cheese and it's instant dinner.

Rain on and off here. How about you? It's supposed to cool off now that the storms came through but it's still pretty warm and at least 90% humid. Maybe the grass will green up a bit.

cloudless blue sky yesterday, which meant that the water park was jammed to capacity, which i despise. i hate waiting in lines for 45 minutes for a two minute ride down a water slide in a tube. not sure what the forecast is here, but it has been brutally hot and humid all week, rain or no. and we haven't had rain for a few days now. my vaca is almost over and your's is about to begin. i will miss you SG : )

Well, see if you had changed vacation location, you could have waited two minutes for a 45 minute slide down a tube.
