SALT LAKE CITY - Relatives of a missing woman and her husband said late Saturday that the husband has given them information that prompted them to call off a volunteer search for the woman.

The families' statement did not reveal what Mark Hacking told them.

Investigators said they had not yet heard from the Hackings' relatives and were trying to reach them.

"If they've got information that's breaking, that's something we need to hear about." Detective Phil Eslinger told The Associated Press late Saturday.

Eslinger said detectives were trying to arrange a meeting with the family members, but he could not confirm a report that relatives were headed to the Salt Lake police department.

Lori Hacking, 27, has been missing since July 19, when Mark Hacking told authorities that she failed to return from an early morning jog.

Lori Hacking's father, Eraldo Soares, said late Saturday that he was unaware of any new information about his daughter.

"I think it's crazy that they raise my hopes and chop me down," Soareas said, speaking from his home in California.

Soares has complained bitterly about not getting information from police. He said his updates on the case have come from reporters.

Police said they are planning a news conference Sunday.

...and you know how well the cable news channels handle breaking news on the weekends.

I happened to surf by FoxNews tonight, and Rita Cosby (who looks like she lost 30lbs, btw) seemed to be sitting on a secret.

...she has sources, you know. ;)

Someone said that the Rita Cosby bit was pre-recorded earlier. This was breaking news from the AP.

We'll have to wait til tomorrow to see if there really is "breaking news" and a police news conference.

Why, pray tell, did this get bumped to chat? (I saw the headline while browsing and when I came by to read, it was gone (to chat-land). It's a legitimate headline news story, suitable for Extended if not Front Page news. See these links, also:

Search now 'unnecessary,' say families of Lori Hacking

Update: Soares, Hacking families issue statement; say search unnecessary

He should have told them before. Wonder when SLCPD will announce his arrest?

Thanks, blondee!!

I saw Rita Cosby's report, but not when it was brand-new. They talked about the logistics of searching a landfill. She had Dr. Baden on, and he said in one NY case, they found the victim's body 18 feet beneath the surface of a landfill.

Also, I think I now know why he got rid of the mattress, even though it reportedly contained no blood. They said there were signs that a person had been stabbed on the mattress--presumably cuts in the fabric. But they said someone had protected the mattress from blood with something, possibly a tarp. (Oh, no--not another tarp!)

But I don't get that. If you stabbed someone on a mattress which was covered with a tarp, and made holes all the way down to the mattress, that means you made holes in the tarp, and it seems to me that blood would leak through those holes onto the mattress.

Devil, I guess us Freepers think alike or are just smarter, as I thought that too. No matter what you cover the mattress with, if you poke holes in the cover thru to the mattress, the blood would seep thru anyway. I guess it's all conjecture at this point & no news conference today as reported.
This whole case is more weird than the Peterson one if you ask me. Nothing seems to make sense!
