As We Get Older, How Do Our Dating Values Change?

Angelo was a 45-year-old, never-married contractor from Massachusetts. As the years went by, his standards were going down.

“I’m not looking for Victoria’s Secret, like I used to be,” he said. “Just a fairly attractive woman who is similar to me, who will laugh and be happy.”

Freepers...would you like to share your success/horror stories concerning dating, including online dating services?

My first serious boyfriend was a conservative Christian fundamentalist who wanted children.

He confessed to engaging in cybersex with minors as young as 13-years-old.

'Nuff said.

To be fair, he had a lot of red flags and our relationship was horrible and full of fights, anger, and sexual manipulation. I was the stupid one to let myself be trapped so long--the full extent of what went on didn't hit me for months. Just thinking about it makes me cry. Women should not vote or lead the nation--we're so very easy manipulated.

The only thing I've learned from the experience is... your friends and loving family will very, very rarely lead you astray on your dates. If they hate your date's guts, drop them like a hot potato.

ANd, above all, any feeling that you're "trapped" in a relationship is entirely in your mind. Unless you're married, you can and should cut it off. Doesn't matter if you have a ring or whatever, just LEAVE!

But my best online dating story involves being invited to dinner at this man's house for the 4th date. He greeted me at the door in ladies undies and fuzzy slippers begging to be spanked cause he had been a naughty boy.

LOL! I haven't had anything *that* freaky, but then again I usually don't make it to the 4th date with the loser chicks I meet online.

The closest I've come to that was the gal that talked me into going to an "adult toy store" after dinner on our first date. She kept talking about 'doing it', even before we met. That was way too fast for me.

Eve ate the apple because she wanted the world.
Adam ate the apple because he wanted to keep having sex with Eve.

It's not changed since then, apparently...

Why would any socially healthy person have to meet someone online?

Fantastic question, and you probably already know the answer.

In some societies, you had people who were experts in arranging the introduction of people. Everything was very "prim and proper", and the two individuals were formally introduced.

Today, that formal introduction does not exist.

So, as humans, we are forced to "wing it" and do our best.

I have speech and hearing impairments. It's hard to get a date when you can't even say hello.

Eharmony is wonderful.

I've seen the commercials for that, but aren't going to particpate simply on the principle that I don't see how some computer is going to "match me up" with some chick based solely on how we answer questions. (I'm always amused by those annoying emails I get from match.com that lists your matches by percentage. Like, I think I'll reply to *this* one since we are an 82% match, but ignore *that* one, who is only an 81% match).

Anyway, if I ever did fill out one of those 'eharmony' questionnaires, I'm sure it would tell me that "finding a match for me impossible" based on my responses. I'm just too *different*.

I'll bet women misrepresented themselves in the looks department

Actually, I've been pleasantly surprised by how the gals on match.com look.

The problem many of them have is their personality and their brain, not their looks.

How are the personalities in your estimation?

Great advise!

Can you give me her phone number and current rate by using private mail?

Obviously, she is not "wife" material, but is great for a good time.

Then you certainly are an exception. No offense meant.

The idea of doing that on-line is superficially appealing (shop for the woman of your dreams!!!), but I rather doubt that I personally could make it work -- I need time to become comfortable around a person; the idea of shopping for wives pretty much trashes that.

The advantage to online dating is that you "meet" a lot more chicks. Meeting more people increases your chances. It's the shotgun approach to dating.

Lol. Be warned, she's close to 20 years older and a full fledged lawyer now. You might not get the type of ******* you're looking for.

I have quite a bit of online dating experience. Almost all of the men remain friends of mine today. I count 11 on my IM list now. Unfortunately they usually become pushy for sex on the second date, and I don't go for that and turn down the third date requests. That does often lead to good discussions, though, and they continue to ask my opinion about other things going on in their lives - even about other women they date. *L*
I turn down many more first dates than I accept, too, because so many of the men are way too young for me. It doesn't feel right going out with someone who is closer to my sons' ages than to mine. Apparently dating older women is a trend now.

Sorry darling, but that is not an excuse.

Sooner or later, you will find a man that finds you absolutely perfect.

That is a promise!

Your challenge is to become that wonderful person, when he finally locates you.

Are you ready, and able to recognize it when it does happen?

I usually don't make it to the 4th date with a loser either. Most have been one date and out. He had looked pretty masculine to me on our previous dates.

I don't blame you by being put off by that woman on the first date. Isn't the slice of humanity that is out there dating just sort of incredible? And not always for good reasons!

Remember, I found my perfect wife in a bar 17 years ago. If anything, we fall in love with each other each and every single day.

To be absolutly honest, she scared the hell out of me. I would not even go to the bathroom without my wallet! Sue was a "biker babe" and knew everything about sex and male manipulation. She was an expert!

I can not tell you this in any other words.

When you are ready, your mate will be found.

The key words are: "When you are ready."

I am married, so this is an academic discussion for me.

Please note that it's just a personal observation, not meant to apply to anyone else. I'm an engineer who knows from experience that it's one thing to converse in writing, when you have time to check your writing and reasoning; and quite another to do it face to face, with no breathing room.

I'm fine, if there's nothing Serious lurking in the background. If you add "Serious" to the mix (and "looking to get married" would qualify), it would take a lot of face-to-face time for me to be comfortable.

Man, I know I'm going to step on toes here, and incite the wrath of hell upon myself, but I feel compelled.

LOL! If you don't manage to post stuff that pisses a lot of folks off once in awhile, you aren't trying hard enough :)

I think most of the men, and all of the women who turn to the internet for dating, are screwed up individuals

Well, I think most folks are pretty "screwed up". Online dating lets you meet more people, so even if more internet daters are screwed up, because you're meeting more people, you're also meeting more "normal" ones. Hopefully.

Why would any socially healthy person have to meet someone online?

As for myself (who is certainly "socially unhealthy)", meeting people at work is out of the question because to start with, there aren't many women there, and I really don't think it's wise to get involved with someone at work. All of my hobbies (shooting, reading, hiking, travelling, working around the house) are solitary hobbies, so meeting women in the course of engaging in my hobbies isn't going to happen. I don't attend church, so I'm not going to meet anyone there. So I decided to try the online dating thing.

As for why others use it, I think it's a reflection of a changing society. Sexual harassment laws make it imprudent to date (or even flirt) with people at work. People are much more mobile than they were 20 years ago. As such, they don't establish roots in an area that allows them to find dates by "networking". And I think the general quality of people has declined over the last decade or so. So it's natural that folks would explore other avenues for dating.

I am naturally suspicious of anyone having trouble finding dates. There must be a reason.

The reason is that most chicks are either sluts, sperm bandits, statists, leftists, gold diggers, or psychos.

sperm bandits

Now that is a new term for me, but it made me laugh my butt off!

Thanks for giving me a good laugh tonight.
