~The Dragon Flies' Lair~Thread XIV~
July 23, 2004 | bentfeather and Poets of the Lair

My Dragon Fly and Me

If I could be a Dragon Fly
and wing my way through the sky
I would never be shy
just me and my Dragon Fly!

By moonlight we ride the wind
chase the comets tail for fun
by day we would hide from the sun
our fragile wings would come undone

On darkest nights we would use
fireflies as our guide
we would dip and we would glide
through the heavens open wide
and scatter diamonds in the night sky
my Dragon Fly and I...

And we would wing past our lovers
silent in the night...
to kiss their face in our flight
much to their surprise and delight
my Dragon Fly and me in sight...

Such a view do we share
away up here in the air
of breezes soft through our hair
my Dragon Fly and me a pair...

Welcome. I suppose interesting is the word. :-)
But you know how it is, whatever wakes the muse...
I actually wrote a free verse poem I like, I must be
coming down with some poetic flu or something ;-)

Echo

I cry out to you,
but you don't hear my plea.
I fade in agony
till I am but an echo,
forever tortured by my
resounding love for you.
The solitary echo of my shattered heart.

In Istanbul
a merchant with
scents of myrrh
and luring lovely eyes
loved me
but

I desired your
molten will.

Yeah, I actually had greek mythology in mind. Echo
was a nymph who pined for Narcissus, but he didn't
feel anything in return. She pined for him till she
faded into nothing but an echo, which obviously bears
her name.

Narcissus was in love with himself and had no room for a real lover.

And I'm sure you know narcissism is named for him.

Don't know much about them myself.
I like hyacinths, lilacs & such. Orchids
as well, even if they have no fragrance.

O Captain! My Captain!

O Captain! My Captain! our fearful trip is done;
The ship has weather'd every rack, the prize we sought is won;
The port is near, the bells I hear, the people all exulting,
While follow eyes the steady keel, the vessel grim and daring:
But O heart! heart! heart!
O the bleeding drops of red,
Where on the deck my Captain lies,
Fallen cold and dead.

Kerry Lies

War Criminal or War Hero,
See both you cannot be.
You claimed you burned a village,
Sounds like a crime to me.
Cambodia in Sixty-Eight,
You say that you were there.
You said Nixon said you weren’t,
Just why would Nixon care?
He wasn’t even president,
Till Nineteen Sixty-Nine.
But details never bother you,
Bold lies do suit you fine.
Three Purple Hearts for paper cuts,
A Bronze and Silver Star.
Then home you came, threw them away,
But look now, there they are.
You testified with still more lies,
About brave fighting men.
The things you claimed that they did,
Just aren’t true now or then.
So tell us please John Kerry,
Which lie we should believe.
Oh what a tangled web you’ve weaved,
You practice to deceive.

Walt Whitman wrote his poem about President Lincoln, "O Captain! My Captain!" in 1865, but he revised it in 1866, and again in 1871.

Whitman's lecture on Lincoln was much in demand during the poet's old age, and in the 1880s he usually included a recitation of "O Captain." He gave the lecture and recitation almost annually in the 1880s--four times in 1886. He once told his friend Horace Traubel (1858-1919), "Damn My Captain . . . I'm almost sorry I ever wrote the poem" though it did have "certain emotional immediate reasons for being." One of these was the centrality of the Civil War to Whitman's personal and poetic life and his perception of the war as a reflection of the nation on trial. Whitman also once envisioned Lincoln as an archangel captain and reportedly dreamed the night before the assassination about a ship entering a harbor under full sail.
