Welcome to The Hobbit Hole!
...Let them pass! Let them pass!
(Note to dwarves, this is only meant figuratively)
New verse:
Upon the hearth the fire is red, Beneath the roof there is a bed; But not yet weary are our feet, Still round the corner we may meet A sudden tree or standing stone That none have seen but we alone. Tree and flower and leaf and grass, Let them pass! Let them pass! Hill and water under sky, Pass them by! Pass them by! |
Still round the corner there may wait A new road or a secret gate, And though we pass them by today, Tomorrow we may come this way And take the hidden paths that run Towards the Moon or to the Sun. Apple, thorn, and nut and sloe, Let them go! Let them go! Sand and stone and pool and dell, Fare you well! Fare you well! |
Home is behind, the world ahead, And there are many paths to tread Through shadows to the edge of night, Until the stars are all alight. Then world behind and home ahead, Well wander back to home and bed. Mist and twilight, cloud and shade, Away shall fade! Away shall fade! Fire and lamp, and meat and bread, And then to bed! And then to bed! |

Sounds like a great party to me, 2J! Glad they both had fun.
How is the older brother doing? Any updates there?

Yeah, that was a bit of a weird thread. Seriously, though, I hope he ends up OK! Seems like a most of those kind of cases never end happily.

Working my way back through Fullmetal Alchemist - which if you haven't seen, you've got to. It's one of my favorites and it's not even done yet.
But that's on the computer... after dinner I might watch some Fruits Basket, I've got that on DVD.

I have a few of that on my computer. I have a huge amount of stuff that I don't have time to watch because I stockpile it to show at the Anime Iowa convention. I am in charge of the video rooms for that. I watched the first few minutes of the first episode and found it much to dark for my liking. There after is has been in the mental 'watch only of you are totally out of stuff to watch' list. I have heard it is good but I found that opening scene pretty disturbing. Personally I am working back through Fancy Lala because I finally got the last 2 disks.
Fruits Basket rules. Defiantly one of my favorites

I like a nice dark anime now and then. Just mildly dark, though. Cowboy Bebop and Vampire Princess Miyu were really too dark for my tastes... Fullmetal Alchemist is dark-ish, I guess, but has a lot of humor and good strong plot.
I'm also working on tracking down information about Full Metal Panic, partly because it confuses me to have two anime so close in name and partly because I've heard Full Metal Panic is good, if occasionally veering into slightly-ecchi territory... there's an anime club in town I'm trying to get info on, I figure someone there might know stuff.
Fruits Basket rocks. It's one of the two manga I collect right now (the other being Ruruoni Kenshin). What's Fancy Lala?

Cowboy Bebop I liked. I might have to give Alchemist a second chance sometime. I use to like just about every anime show but now that I am hip deep in stuff right from japan I see more so-so and lousy shows. I usually stop watching a show if it is boring, too dark, to cliche, or has some premise or character that I just can't stomach.
Full Metal Panic is GREAT. It came out before Alchemist so Alc was the one that confused me hehe. FMP is really funny and has a solid plot. I am thinking and I don't recall it ever being any more ecchi than Fruits Basket. Which is to say not much at all. I could be forgetting something... Watching a lot of anime can make you insensitive to a mild level of fan-service. Are you looking for any more specific info on it? I can give you the full review of both it and the sequel series (and I hear they are making a 3rd series).

Fancy Lala is your basic '10year old gains the magic power to transforming 16yearold and uses it to become and idol singer' plot. Is that basic? Anyway, it is a sub genre of Magical Girl shows I guess. Lala is pretty good. Full Moon wa Sagashite was a similar plot idea but much better with it's cool twist.

Nah, I think I've figured out which is the original, and which is the sequel, and if you're right about the ecchi-level, I'll try it.
I'm making Rosie and ksen (and ksen's family) watch Fullmetal Alchemist; SuziQ's daughter is the one who got me hooked, so it's sort of the Hobbit Hole anime club thing... let's see. I wouldn't put it any darker than Ruruoni Kenshin's Kyoto arc, if you've seen that. And there are a lot of really good moments that for me make it worth watching. Oh, yeah - and it's an action show that doesn't involve mecha, schoolgirls with magic powers, or collecting anything, so for me that makes it fairly worth watching... and has definitely not bishounen guys, which is a real plus for me. Basically, I'm a huge fan. It reminds me of why I got hooked on anime in the first place. I'm eagerly awaiting each episode as it's fansubbed.
I just sort of feel like fanservice should be insulting to me as a female anime watcher. Can't quite say why... ah well... I'm thinking of going to a convention in September and considering cosplaying, and the only costume I could pull off with the time and money I've got here is probably a generic schoolgirl look, haven't decided whether to do that or not.

I haven't seen Full Moon either... actually, got any other recommendations? I love Escaflowne, Fruits Basket, first two seasons of Kenshin, and FMA, what would you suggest?

Cosplaying can be fun. I did Ranma at a few conventions. Someday I will go as Ranma to a con and with my sister doing Ranma-chan. That would be fun. Yeah fanservice is slightly insulting since it is playing to the hormones of the male views. I have not seen that far in Kenshin since I still have not gotten more of the dvds :P I will probably after the convention since I still have a few things to buy before that. I love shows that are 'non-standard' like that. FMP could have fallen into being just another mecha action show but the characters and humor they put into it make it really good. The Mecha almost feel like a side back drop that could have been done away with entirely without changing the show much. I never really thought of it that way until just now... but it is true. They could have adapeted it to have no Mecha at all.
I really like to see shows that have a new and interesting premise. Kalido Star is one like that and I really am loving that show.
Nice to see not all women are gaga for Bishounen :P

Heh, no, give me a real guy any time... Kenshin comes too close to bishounen for my tastes, really. You should have been at Entmoot! We watched Escaflowne and I think that's where I developed the "Allen-rule of dating: never date a guy who's prettier than you are". And he's not even as bad as some - I've been reading some of Watase Yu's manga (Fushugi Yuugi, Ceres, etc) and noticed that most of her men are waaaay too pretty).
Kenshin is the greatest anime ever for the first two seasons. The third is really, really, really lame. Rent it to make your own decision, but I'd save the money.

Like guys with scars eh? lol jk
Sagura is one of my all time to favorite anime characters. I forget to breath watching that show. soo funny...
Full Moon is really good. Just the right blend of light and fun and seriousness that is not quite dark. The main character has cancer of the throat finds out she has a year to live. She con vices the shinagami that let that slip to her to use their power to give her a shot at fulfilling her secret desire to be a singer in what time she has left. That is all in the first half of the first episode so I am not really spoiling it. To say anymore would be so find it and watch it.

Ok, then I'll put FMP and Full Moon on the find-and-watch list. Thanks!
Scars give character. And sometimes angst - I'm a sucker for angst now and then. Though I like humor, too.
I've been watching anime off and on for nearly five years (had some problems acquiring it for most of that time, ie, mother thinks all anime is Pokemon or hentai), but just recently have felt the language starting to click - can't understand what they're saying but I understand how they're saying it. Does that make sense? It's added a whole new dimension to the experience and I've been re-watching some old favorites now to see what I get that I didn't before.

Yeah I would say that allen-rule is a good one. hehe, will have to remember that... no wait.. that rule is of no use to me. I guess the reverse it to not date a girl uglier than me? hmmm
Sagura is WAAAAY to down to earth to be called Bish.
What would he do it a girl asked to meet him after school?
Go and bring flowers? no way!
Not go because he already has 4 dates lined up? not a chance.
Go and tell her he is not interested? in what?
Go and stake the place out with a sniper rifle because it is probably an ambush? BINGO!

Yeah that makes sense. It is why I can't watch dubs. I am to much tuned to the 'rhythm' of the language. I understand a little of it. The really really strange thing is to find yourself thinking in a language you don't understand. I.E. when a thought pops into your head based on situation context and if asked you would not be able to write down what the words actually meant... that is a strange feeling.

Be still my beating heart... does he come off as insane, or the only rational person around?
And I think the guy's version of the Allen-rule would probably have to do with character rather than beauty. Probably "if she's more macho than I am" would be a good place to start.
