Wood bits dull quickly, and steel-drilling bits need to proceed slowly through wood or they will overheat.

What size hole are you drilling?

Yep the steel bits get clogged.

It is a brand new drill bit for wood, which I used yesterday without any problems.... I did get the three holes drilled deep enough for some shorter screws than the flag pole came with, which were like 21/2 inches long, without a fire. ( there was some smoke tho)

So my Stars and Stripes flag is up, But I do have to go thru this again for my Gadsden flag.... I am just waiting to rehab my wrist a bit...

And I just found a place in town that has the Betsy Ross Flag for sale.... Uh oh! This has been like the Keystone cops put the flag up....My hubby will have a fit if I have three flags up!!!
