My brother was a fix it kid. My Granny used to pick up old wind up alarm clocks & other things for him to take apart at church rummage sales. At age ten he built a carbon arc (arch?) to melt pennies from battery cores, using the transformer from his train set as his power source. He was also the neighborhood bomb builder. Some kind of bomb he built out of sugar blew out the bottom of an old grill. He must have been about 13 at the time. It made quite a report & after it blew up, we had every boy in the neighborhood running every which way, scrambling to get away from the scene of the crime.
