More than 90% of the money goes to the third party (auto auction) It is a SCAM. I know of an auction whose employees were taking donation items and making huge money on ebay for themselves.

We donated an old car directly to our church. The church in turn gave it to a member who was then able to get a decent job to support his family. I knew he needed a car - I did not know the church would give him the one we donated - but it was okay. I could never have received the deduction had we given directly to our fellow church member, and the church was caring for one of its members but handing it over to him so he could better provide for his family (also church members/attenders)
