Nope - it will be Hillary Rodham Clinton as VP at the last second (just in time to save the country, world, universe).

(zik, zik, zik...sharpening Occam's Razor on a leather strop while posting)

If there were such an event actually in the offing, there wouldn't be a doggone thing that the full, combined resources of the world could do about it, let alone some poor fighter jock in an F-18. Or a whole bunch of them. Or all of them, all together.

The physics involved in stopping or deflecting say, a million ton piece of iron and nickel moving at the modest interplanetary relative speed of 20 kilometers a second are simply staggering. Even if there were plenty of notice, what're we going to do? Pop a bunch of nukes off in space in front of it? We end up with, at best, several pieces or a lot of pieces of iron and nickel, pretty much the same trajectory, and pretty much the same mass at about the same speed, only now it's a shotgun blast instead of a rifle bullet.

Our intrepid and heroic F-18 Squadron Commander with the granite jaw and the sexy 'Iceman' nickname at Angels Twelve over the Indian Ocean somewhere sees a brilliant flash of light for an instant, just before his plane comes apart around him from the shock wave.

No, either it really is some kind of huge 'surge exercise', or there's something dark going on in the military and diplomatic world. Maybe we're sending the PRC a message in response to something that they're poised to do, or something.

Well, we could draft an eclectic team of oil well workers to fly to the asteroid, drill an 800 foot hole, insert several nukes, and blow the thing up.

I'm sure the gov't has "gamed" such a scenario.

Just for the sake of argument, they are being sent to deep water so that any surge from an ocean impact is just a swell and not a tidal wave like it would be in shallow water.

Actually, I believe that exploding a nuke (or several nukes) near it would deflect it by a couple of tenths of degrees. If it is far enough out, that would be enough to cause it to miss the earth. However, as far as I know, we have no rocket capable of delivering a nuke that far.

That's what I'd do with the fleet, if it were my call. Still, I am far from convinced with this meteorite-strike stuff. All that we have is one highly dubious source, and a lot of material from sites that say this kind of thing all the time, anyway.

When there is some solid evidence of something seriously amiss, I'll start being concerned. I am close enough to the Atlantic that it'd end up in my living room from an ocean strike. But when you've got big, nasty cardiac problems, giant seismic waves aren't the first of your personal safety worries.

I'm going when God says it's time to go. Doesn't matter to me whether it's my ticker quitting in the middle of the night, or with me running down the parking lot, surfboard over my head toward a roaring, six hundred foot wall of shockwave driven water.

Surf's up, dude.

BTW, I've got the resident meteor/comet/asteroid expert looking at this. He may actually have met this guy at a conference if he's been active in research in the last 20 years.

I'll be interested to see if he's the real deal, or if he's one of these guys who can find evidence of extraterrestrial archetecture in a bowl of soggy corn flakes.

I am really suspicious of anyone who starts on about 'government coverups' and 'attempts to silence him'. I have heard that song before. If you really are blabbing off with secret stuff, governments generally will just grab you, rather than letting you post stuff all over the place and shutting down websites in your wake.

A single source and a few quotes from the Art Bell crowd doesn't lend a lot of credibility.

Hey Great! Finally some time off!

That's exactly what I said on the gurney, when being rushed in for an emergency coronary bypass operation. I wasn't entirely kidding, either.

Comets make rare joint appearance
By Chris Herde
May 19, 2004

STARGAZERS have been witnessing a rare cosmic event this month with two comets appearing in the sky together.

In what is believed to be the first on record in Australia, two comets – Neat and Linear – are in the inner solar system and visible to the naked eye.

Cosmos Centre manager Jane Morgan said both comets were only recently discovered and Neat was named after the Near Earth Asteroid Tracking group and Linear for the Lincoln Near Earth Asteroid Research group.

The comets were seen in New Zealand and in Victoria and Tasmania last week while northern Australian stargazers will have their chance to see the double cosmic act over the next seven to 10 days.

"There are millions of comets out there but we don't see them very regularly in the inner solar system," Ms Morgan said from Charleville in western Queensland.

"But to actually get two at the same time is a really rare event.

"Looking through the records to date I have not found anything where there has been two in the sky together.

"So to be that close together and observable is really quite amazing."

The two comets can be seen by the naked eye in the Cancer constellation near the beehive cluster, which can be seen in the north-west, low in the sky between 7pm and 9pm (AEST).

They should be able to be seen from anywhere in Australia away from any artificial light source.

Ms Morgan warned that the two comets could be hard to locate.

Both have tails up to 2.3 million kilometres long but Neat's is hidden while Linear's is faint.

Mr Morgan said comet hunters have been inundating astro internet sites with their impressions of the twin comets.

"Everyone is just talking about these two great comets and how fabulous it is and aren't we lucky to be here on the planet when it actually happens," she said.

Have you hugged your kids today?

I hugged my kid yesterday - on his quick stop over - on his way back to Quantico! He was not in high spirits have just returned from Scott Halverson's memorial service in San Diego! Very sad!

Agreed. If they even THOUGHT he would let the cat out of the bag, he would simply disappear. But for the sake of argument, wouldn't the best way to discredit someone with news so incredible that it simply couldn't be true be to let him spread it?

BTW, I saw a trailer for "Chiclen Little, The Movie" Monday.
